Both the Cicero-North Syracuse and Liverpool indoor track and field teams emerged from last Saturday’s CNY Indoor Track Association meet at SUNY-Cortland’s Lusk Field House with victories in the afternoon session.
The Northstars prevailed on the boys side, earning 94.5 points to the Warriors’ 69 points. However, Liverpool won the girls meet with 97 points as CNS (74 points) settled for the runner-up spot.
In the boys meet, CNS set the winning tone in the 4×200 relay as Keenan Williams, Xavier Richardson, Ryan Connor and Dillon McKee posted a time of 1:42.55 to hold off Auburn (1:42.95).
The Northstars got a 1-2 finish in the pole vault, as Brendan Ryan won, clearing 11 feet with fewer misses than McKee. Williams was also second in the 55-meter hurdles (8.29 seconds) as Connor got second in the 300-meter dash in 39.56 seconds.
Chris Buchanan also won, covering the mile in 4:30.63 to beat Skaneateles’ Calvin Davis (4:33.92) by more than three seconds. Alex Bottorff was third in the 500-meter run (1:16.29), while Dan Fritz was third in the 800-meter run (2:13.32).
In field events, Jared Thomson took second in the shot put (45 feet 9 inches) as Demertius Oliver cleared 5 feet 4 inches for third place in the high jump.
Liverpool found success on the boys side in the 800, where Zavon Watkins prevailed in 2:06.21, and the 55 hurdles, where Joe Spernyak (8.23 seconds) edged past Williams to win.
Tony Shuler (38 feet 3 1/2 inches) and Justin McGriff (37 feet 2 1/4 inches) went 1-2 in the triple jump, with McGriff adding a second in the high jump as he cleared 5 feet 4 inches with fewer misses than Oliver. Joseph Lona was third (10 feet 6 inches) in the pole vault. LaQuan Kitchen and Damien Brown were fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 55-meter dash.
Turning to the girls meet, Liverpool took charge by earning a lot of high finishes, including Chelsea Attaway’s victory in the 800-meter run in a time of 2:35.25. Also, Attaway won the pole vault, clearing 8 feet 6 inches.
Nikki Carfi took first place in the triple jump, going 30 feet 11 1/2 inches, and added a second (9.94 seconds) in the 55 hurdles. Trina Bills was second in the 1,500-meter run (5:05.13) and Lesley Bowers third (5:06.48), as Rachel Putman got second in the 500 (1:25.39) and Hannah Anthes claimed third place in the 55-meter dash in 7.94 seconds.
On the CNS side, Maria Lamontagne prevailed in the 1,500 in 4:54.97, ahead of Bills and Bowers, while Valerie Langevin threw the shot put 32 feet 8 1/4 inches to win that event.
Katie Osborne emerged to win the 55 hurdles in 9.28 seconds, with teammate Justine Seliger third, as Jasmine Thompson cleared 5 feet 2 inches for second in the high jump. Sarah Shannon took second in the 800 (2:36.56) behind Attaway as Katie Laris, Laura Tolbert, Daija DeLee and Stephanie Grethel prevailed in the 4×400 relay in 4:36.71.
