In Friday night’s Section III Class A quarterfinal, the Vernon-Verona-Sherrill girls volleyball team would host no. 13 seed Cortland, who upset no. 4 seed Carthage in the opening round in a three-game sweep.
This one didn’t prove to be close, as the Red Devils hammered the Purple Tigers. VVS took the first two games with 25-15 and 25-11 margins before holding off Cortland 25-23 in the third game for the sweep.
Alex Jones, with seven aces, set a powerful tone as Rikki Kneeskern gained 12 kills and Alexis Albro earned four kills. Rachel Brown led the Red Devils with 18 assists as Stephanie Siriano worked her way to 12 assists, four aces and two kills.
On Tuesday night at Chittenango, VVS will play in the Class A semifinals against East Syracuse-Minoa, who followed its Oneida win by rallying from an 0-2 deficit in games to shock top seed New Hartford in its quaterfinal. Whoever won would be at Jamesville-DeWitt Saturday to face Fulton or Watertown in the Class A final.
