Now was the chance for the West Genesee boys golf team to put together a strong finish to the 2007 season.
And the Wildcats did not waste that opportunity, especially in Wednesday’s match against Fayetteville-Manlius, where it knocked off the Hornets 187-200 at Westvale Golf Club.
F-M was fresh off handing 14-0 Liverpool its first defeat of the season, but it could not replicate the magic as WG tore up its familiar surroundings and produced the six lowest scores of the match.
Connor Wisniewski led again, with a 36 over nine holes. Scott Lewis and Donald Longo each provided rounds of 37, as Alec Stoianoff earned a 38. Mark Costello and Matt Salvetti matched each other with rounds of 39 to close out the deal.
By contrast, no F-M player fared better than 40, a number five different Hornets — Tyler Ramie, Tyler Kingsley, Kevin Albanese, Max Cooper and Corey Johns — reached.
This just culminated a three-day stretch where WG won a trio of matches. The Wildcats got that moving Monday, at Westvale, when it held off Cicero-North Syracuse’s Blue team in a 197-199 decision.
Wisniewski and Longo each shot nine-hole totals of 38, and with every shot important, Lewis and Stoianoff matched each other with rounds of 39. One CNS player, Joe Ilacqua, matched the low round of 38. CNS Blue would also go on to beat Liverpool, on the same day WG beat F-M.
Going to Drumlins West a day later, the Wildcats built a much larger winning margin as it beat the Nottingham Bulldogs 195-246.
As Wisniewski shot a strong 34, Stoianoff’s late-season emergence continued as he added a 35. Kyle Pawlina led the next pack of WG golfers, shooting a 40.
