It was, as Skaneateles girls tennis coach Jeri Whiting called it, a “short but fabulous” season.
On the court for six matches, the Lakers managed to win all of them, an undefeated run where both singles and doubles players made enormous contributions.
And it ended with a pair of impressive victories late last week once the rains stopped.
Up against Marcellus last Thursday at Austin Park, the Lakers claimed all four points in doubles and prevailed by the same 5-2 margin that it did when the two met eight days earlier.
In single-set matches to eight games, Sophia Soderberg and Alice Spaulding blanked Bella Clarke and Maddie Vetsch 8-0, with Sofia Capozza and Maggie Newton topping Sarah Louer and Sophia Powless by those same scores.
Ella Danforth and Emma Miller rolled, 8-1, over Casey Conklin and Sophia Shaw, with Rachel Hackler and Kelsey Rutledge taking an 8-3 decision over Angelina Coleman and Sophie Spitzer.
Both of the Mustangs’ points came in singles, where Colleen Marsh edged Isabelle Soderberg 9-8 and Danielle Copp routed Lily Miller 8-1, but Skaneateles had Kenna Ellis win 8-4 over Kathleeen DeMarle.
Just as important for the Lakers was its 4-3 victory over Christian Brothers Academy, which planted the Lakers atop the OHSL Liberty division standings.
Ellis and Lily Miller managed just one game between them in singles defeats to, respectively, Gieselle Vlassis and Julia DelPino, but Isabelle Soderberg rescued a point by topping Allie Mancini 8-5.
Skaneateles also earned three of the four doubles points as Rachel Hackler and Kelsey Rutledge pulled away from Lily Geneocco and Hanna Kang 8-3, with Capozza and Newton winning 8-4 over Meredith Sommers and Audrey Schaefer.
Spaulding and Sophia Soderberg got close in an 8-6 loss to Annie Kilmartin and Isabella Mead, but in the decisive first doubles match Danforth and Emma Miller did enough to edge Aubrey Mills and Grace Catalano 9-7.
That same Friday afternoon, Marcellus prevailed 7-0 over the Mexico Tigers as DeMarle, Copp and Marsh each won 8-1 singles decisions over, respectively, Juliana Smith, Paige Masrouri and Caitlyn Hackett.
Coleman, paired with Lila Kelly, held off Bryan Race and Grace Schipper 10-8, with Clarke and Vetsch winning 8-6 over Ella Blunt and Anita Druce. Meanwhile, Conklin and Shaw handled Juliana Hernandez and Tori Stores 8-3 as, by that same score, Louer and Powless beat Mia Morris and Shelby Schumacher,
