If it wanted to climb back to the top of the Salt City Athletic Conference Metro division standings before its 2020 season concluded, the Fayetteville-Manlius boys golf team had to win against Baldwinvsille.
The two sides met last Monday at the Cavalry Club, where competition at the top was quite close, but the Hornets displayed a bit more depth and won 198-204 over the Bees.
There was a three-way tie for first place, John Sommers and Matt LaCombe each shooting nine-hole totals of 38, matching that of B’ville’s Billy Guild.
Now in front, F-M stayed there when Andrew Heyman’s 39 equaled that of the Bees’ Aidan Farmer, and pulled clear when Jack Antshel shot 41 and Velton Perry a 42 ahead of the B’ville’s Nate McGregor (43) and Trey Ordway (44).
A day later, F-M Green did complete its season against Liverpool, finishing at 6-1 in the wake of a 197-240 romp over the Warriors at Foxfire.
LaCombe, who broke 40 in every match this season, did so again with a 37 to set the pace ahead of Heyman’s 38. Tobey Schulman added a 40, with Alex Duggleby and Seth Bailey both contributing rounds of 41.
Not done with its season, F-M’s White team prevailed 214-261 over Chittenango last Tuesday at Woodcrest, despite a leading 37 by the Bears’ Tanner Smith.
Andrew Ahn and Jason Carter both shot 40, joined by a 41 from August Larson. Isaac Frechette gained a 44 and Sam Elbadawi finished with a 46.
F-M White challenged Baldwinsville on Thursday and lost 192-202. Larson and Jack Perry both shot 39, with 41s from Elbadawi and George LaCombe and a 42 from Carter as Farmer put up a 35 for the Bees.
Both Jamesville-DeWitt and East Syracuse Minoa traveled to Green Lakes on Thursday to take part in the SCAC Empire division tournament.
The Red Rams finished second in the five-team field with a total of 407 to Oswego’s winning 393 as Punn Chittaratlert tied for second among individuals, his 77 only trailing the 74 from the Buccaneers’ Ryan Bartlett.
Tanner Burns tied for fourth with a 79, while Jackson Saroney had an 81 and Julian Galletta earned an 82 to each finish in the top 10 for J-D. Mitchell Archer added an 88 to finish 14th.
As for the Spartans, who finished fourth at 467, Zach Johnson did best, his 89 earning 16th place. Braedon Smith and Aaron Reynolds both posted 90 as Logan Welch, Spencer Bryant and Keegan Barry each finished at 96.
Christian Brothers Academy carried a 3-3 record into last Tuesday’s match against Jordan-Elbridge, but moved back above the .500 mark by defeating the Eagles 199-234 at Drumlins.
Joe Nicholson broke par, shooting a 34, leading a top-three sweep for the Brothers. Jack Gregory had a 39, with Luke Snyder adding a 41 and Dan Angelo getting a 42, the same as J-E’s Colin Jewsbury. Jack MacLachlan added a 43.
Trying to knock off first-place Westhill a day later at Camillus Golf Club, CBA nearly did so, but that effort fell just short in a 216-219 loss to the Warriors.
Nicholson’s 40 trailed Westhill’s Anthony Maglisco (39) by one stroke. MacLachlan had a 41 and Angelo a 43, but Gregory (46) and Snyder (50) were further behind as Aidan Ryan (40), Luke Gilmartin (44), Michael Britt (45) and Devin Young (48) helped the Warriors win it.
CBA played in a five-team match Saturday which included wins over Tully and Mexico. Shooting 204, the Brothers got three rounds of 41 from Nicholson, Snyder and MacLachlan, with Emmet Kilmartin adding a 42 and Mike Santaro a 44.
