Through the years, not many have been able to accomplish what the Jamesville-DeWitt/CBA boys swim team pulled off at home in last Thursday night’s 2006-07 season opener.
In an early clash of powers, the Red Rams managed to topple long-time Section III champion Liverpool, earning a 99-87 victory over the Warriors.
To win here, J-D/CBA had to stay patient, especially when Liverpool won three of the first four events, including the 200 medley relay (1:47.71).
Only Tyghe Speidel, who claimed the 200 individual medley in 2:11.68, broke up that early Warrior run.
Things started to turn around in diving, a long-time Liverpool strength. Clayton Sutton, fresh off his award-winning gymnastics season, posted a total of 254.75 points, a figure no Warrior could match.
Liverpool then won the next three events, but J-D/CBA earned solid points in each of those events, staying close to the fight.
Then, the surge began. In the 200 freestyle relay, Paul Romano, Mike Daly, James Wanamaker and Matt Lowery got together and, in a time of 1:36.13, fended off the Warriors to earn big points.
Jack Fletcher went next, in the 100 backstroke, and swam to a time of 1:02.89 to win that event. Then Speidel returned, claiming a second title as he covered the 100 breaststroke in 1:05.10.
With the meet on the line, J-D/CBA’s 400 freestyle relay team delivered. Speidel, Fletcher, Wanamaker and Daly earned a time of 3:44.49 that produced the clinching points.
