Amid a stretch where it would have seven contests in 16 days, the Skaneateles wrestling team would face rival Marcellus on Thursday night.
And the Lakers would gain a satisfying victory, dominating in the upper weight classes and holding off the Mustangs 42-37.
Starting at 170 pounds, when Russ Burkhardt defeated Ryan Long 13-6, Skaneateles won four times in five matches, counting Garrett Navaroli’s forfeit at 285 pounds. Jake Brillo, at 182 pounds, pinned John Dunn 47 seconds into the third period, while Connor Gray (195 pounds) took just 1:45 to pin Zach Crysler.
Brad Ditch, at 113 pounds, claimed the Lakers’ other forfeit, and Skaneateles had to surrender three matches for the same reason, but made up for it with success elsewhere.
Tyler Saunders wrestled at 126 pounds and pinned Zach Caza in 1:12, while Adam Notarpole (152 pounds) earned his pin over Keith McIntosh 39 seconds into the second period. Josh Brillo won at 120 pounds, topping Nate Long in a 9-4 decision.
Two nights earlier, the Lakers had a non-league meet at West Genesee, earning six different wins on the mat, but still falling to the Wildcats 49-30.
Josh Brillo dominated at 113 pounds, pinning WG’s Yvan Kouakou in 42 seconds. Nevan Rourke (99 pounds) earned his own pin over Jake Jones in 3:09, while Tyler Saunders (126 pounds) claimed a tough 7-6 decision over Tyler Heggelke.
Navaroli pinned Vasyl Podarunok in 4:06 after Cooper Pitman (220 pounds) earned a third-period fall over Matt Kemp. In a tense 170-pound battle, Brillo held off Evan Stefano 4-3. But WG won every match from 132 to 170 pounds, three of them with pins.
The busy week concluded with Saturday’s Falcon Duals at Fabius-Pompey, where it went 3-2 to finish third behind unbeaten Tully (5-0) and Deposit (4-1).
Skaneateles started out with back-to-back victories, taking out Oswego 54-23 and Auburn 50-33, before Deposit defeated the Lakers 56-24 and Tully pulled out a close 44-37 verdict. But Skaneateles closed the day by knocking off host Fabius-Pompey 48-35.
Saunders led the effort, going 5-0 as she shuffled between 126 and 132-pound matches. Jake Brillo and Burkhardt both had 4-1 marks as Pitman went 3-1.
Ditch, Josh Brillo and Max Collier shared equal 3-2 records. Gray, Rourke, Jon Marshall and Drew Newton got two wins apiece. Ryan Swan made his varsity debut at 99 pounds and pinned Tully’s Nick Johnson in 2:35 for a memorable start.
