Long road trips to far-off locations for local indoor track and field teams are now in the past as a new venue, Onondaga Community College’s SRC Arena, is open for activity.
And the indoor athletes christened it during Wednesday’s Jack Morse Relays. Jamesville-DeWitt finished second in both the boys and girls meets, winning several events along the way.
J-D’s girls team had 48 points, a number only Cicero-North Syracuse, with 76 points, would top. Fayetteville-Manlius was fourth (32 points) and East Syracuse-Minoa was ninth with 32 points.
Among the Red Rams’ wins was the 4×400 relay, where Ally Fox, Danielle Doss, Katy Pieri and Liz Pieri posted a time of 4:17.17. In the 4×800, Rachel Fairbanks, Emilee Carpenter, Katie Pinkes and Laura Wengert won in 10:39.89, leaving F-M (10:53.88) to settle for third. In the pole vault, Doss and Katy Pieri cleared a combined 16 feet and won that event, too.
ESM’s Amanda Wall had two victories. She had a top triple jump of 31 feet 9 inches and a top individual long jump by 15 feet 9 ½ inches. In the latter event, Wall teamedwith Mackenzie Rath for second place (28 feet 9 ¾ inches) in the team portion.
On her own, J-D’s Maggie Fuller won the high jump, clearing 5 feet 4 inches, which left her third in the team event as F-M’s Mikayla Ruthig and McKenna Everding (8 feet 8 inches) took second place.
The Hornets saw Michelle Duffy, Mackenzie Pierie, Jessica Howe and Mary Barger get second in the distance medley relay in 13:24.14 as J-D (13:57.52) was fourth and ESM (14:00.16) was fifth. Natalie Zazzara, Hannah Lee, Marri Ryu and Olivia Ryan got F-M a second-place time of 4:29.23 in the 1,600 sprint medley.
Amanda Lee and Sarah Griffiths were third in the 55-meter hurdles, with ESM’S Heather Hiltbrand and Bridget Benz fourth and F-M in fifth place. J-D also got sixth in the 55-meter dash and 4×200 relay.
Moving to the boys side of the Morse relays, J-D, with 40 points, again was runner-up to CNS (92 points), with F-M in eighth place as it earned 17 points.
Most of the Hornets’ points were earned in the 4×400 relay, where Langston Lightcap, Austin Perez, Charlie Beeler and Said Shakuri finished in 3:38.26. J-D was fourth in 3:45.66, as it was fourth (1:41.27) in the 4×200. F-M claimed third in the 1,600 sprint medley in 3:46.90.
The Rams’ Amani Jackson lost a nail-biter to CNS’s Mark Broughton in the 55-meter dash, both finishing in 6.82 seconds. Worse yet, Jackson and Mike Meyer were second in the team event to CNS by one-hundredth of a second, 13.90 seconds to the Northstars’ 13.89.
Also for J-D, Will Sterriker and Nate Sturgeon got second place in the 55 hurdles in a combined 17.02 seconds. Navale Taylor and Will Cote had a total triple jump of 72 feet 2 ¾ inches, which put them in second place here, too.
Ryan Peters and Koy Adams were third in the shot put (79 feet 1 ½ inches) as ESM saw Jesse Perrone, Jake Barker, Nick Schug and Tom Schneible go to fifth place in the 4×800 relay in 9:29.69. J-D’s Zach Liebman cleared 10 feet in the pole vault for fifth place.
