This winter, Stone Quarry Hill Art Park (SQHAP) announced Annie Mitchell as its 2020 Artist-in-Residence.
Mitchell is a light and sound artist “interested in what drives us as humans, the environments in which we thrive and the human connections we need to flourish.”
Using fiber optics and sound, she creates immersive experiences to evoke visceral reactions from her audiences.
“My current projects consider how we exist within a cacophony of stimuli and what that does to our overall health and happiness,” said Mitchell. “Specifically, this has meant conducting research into sound and light pollution of modern life; and thinking about how nature and art can work together to bring us back into balance with the world around us.”
Mitchell will create a site-specific installation at the Art Park during the months of July and August.
The SQHAP Artist-in-Residence program draws artists from all over the world.
According to SQHAP CEO Emily Zaengle, the goal of the program is to support artists — with lodging and a stipend — as they explore their creative processes.
“My primary goal is to be inspired by the seclusion in nature while I gather imagery and auditory samples that will be used as a basis for future projects and for an installation within the park,” said Mitchell. “ . . . Through exploration and experimentation I hope to find new ways to communicate a sense of peace and well being through my artistic practice.”
