The DeWitt Advisory Conservation Commission (DACC) discussed upcoming events and other matters during its most recent meeting on Feb. 5.
The DACC will host a presentation on ticks in the court room of the DeWitt Town Hall at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 5.
Dennis Payne, the chair of the DACC, said last week that the group has been deciding whether to allot each speaker at the event a certain amount of time to share information and answer audience questions afterwards or rather moderate more of a room-wide discussion.
The presentation will offer a medical perspective concerning ticks and diseases they carry.
Later in the Feb. 5 DACC meeting, member Sonia Kragh talked about climate change and an approaching event meant to raise awareness for the cause.
ArtRage Gallery at 505 Hawley Ave in Syracuse will be holding a forum for young climate change activists from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 18.
According to Kragh, the ArtRage Gallery event has limited space for attendees.
The DACC’s meeting last week also turned to the topic of deer culling.
DeWitt town planner Nick Quilty-Koval, present at the meeting, said the town’s deer management program—now in its third year—started up again on Jan. 1 and will continue work with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) through March.
Quilty-Koval said that in the last two years, the town removed 185 deer in total, with over 5,000 pounds of venison being donated to food assistance provider organizations.
The DACC is also working on designating portions of the Onondaga Escarpment within the Town of DeWitt as a Critical Environmental Area (CEA), or a geographic area that contains “sensitive or unique” features requiring protection.
Unless a rescheduling occurs, the DeWitt Advisory Conservation Commission meets the first Wednesday of every month at 7 p.m. in Community Room B of the DeWitt Town Hall.
