All the snow stopped in time for area high school boys bowling teams to make their way to Utica’s Pin-O-Rama for Sunday’s Section III team championships.
Fayetteville-Manlius saw Kevin Winschel record a top-10 individual finish, while Bishop Grimes capped its best season yet with a fourth-place effort in the Class C/D division.
Winschel struggled in his opening-game 173, a contrast to the 300 put up by Oswego’s Oswego Eric Carson, but then posted games of 245 and 226 to close out the morning session.
Peaking in the fourth game, Winschel shot 10 strikes in his 270, and while he fell back to 170 and 182 in his final two games, his 1,268 aggregate still put him in 10th place as Baldwinsville’s Tanner Rozyczko (1,450) edged Central Square’s Dimitri Queior (1,423) for first place.
As to the sectional team competition, F-M, with 5,301, finished eighth in Class A and 11th overall in Division I (large schools), with Baldwinsville taking team honors with 6,294, 250 pins ahead of runner-up Oswego.
Aside from Winschel, the Hornets’ best individual effort came from Dan Fiumara, who shot 225 in his second game on the way to a 1,116 aggregate. Adam Koss had a 1,099 series and high game of 213, with John Jeffrey posting a 912 series.
East Syracuse Minoa fared better, getting sixth place in Class B with 5.484 as Vernon-Verona-Sherrill (6,147) pulled away to win that division along with the team Division II (small school) title.
Tyler Talarico led the Spartans, his six-game score of 1,164 featuring two opening games of 221. Chris Bayly, who also advanced to this week’s sectional shootout, had games of 232 and 235 during his 1,110 series.
Also for ESM, John Messina had games of 216 and 220 and posted 951 for five games as Ryan Buffum had a five-game total of 932.
In Class C/D, Bishop Grimes’ 5,120 put them behind Cooperstown (who won with 5.763), Waterville and Holland Patent, the Cobras peaking with a third-game 925.
Matt Rogers had the top individual total for the Cobras, posting 1,084 for six games, featuring a third-game 221. Alex Williams was close behind, shooting 238 in his third game on his way to a 1,069 set.
Ben Schultz shot 224 in the second game and finished at 1,045, Joe Belton shooting every game between 155 and 197 and finishing with 1,019.
