In their own manners, the Jamesville-DeWitt/CBA and Fayetteville-Manlius wrestling teams both would make an impact during last Saturday’s Section III Class AA championships at Auburn High School.
With 181 points, the Rams won a tight battle with Cicero-North Syracuse (171.5 points) for the runner-up spot behind Liverpool’s winning total of 252 points.
F-M was seventh in the nine-team field, but had a Most Outstanding Wrestler in Sawyer Dereszynski, who took the title at 170 pounds.
After a 2-1 semifinal win over Auburn’s Lucas Hogan, Dereszynski met J-D/CBA’s top seed, Enver Bulatov, in the finals. With 22 seconds left, Dereszynski pinned Bulatov for the title.
Liam Malgieri won, too, at 285 pounds, claiming a 3-2 overtime victory over Liverpool’s J.J. Guindy in the title bout as Alex Dauksza nearly won at 160 pounds before dropping the final 6-4 to West Genesee’s Colin McAvan. Luke Richter finished fifth at 145 pounds thanks to an 8-1 win over WG’s Jacob Gonzalez.
As for CBA/J-D, Tyriq Block was victorious at 182 pounds, dominating the field as he sailed past Rome Free Academy’s John Walston 15-5 in the title bout.
Moving to 152 pounds, Shoh Alibekov prevailed in a classic final against Liverpool’s Chris Ianno, the points going back and forth until Alibekov prevailed 8-7.
Ethan Wells won at 126 pounds in a 9-5 decision over Liverpool’s Jacob Ianno, while teammate Garrett Williams got third by shutting out Ryan Fedigan (Auburn) 6-0.
Muaweyah El-Hindi reached the finals at 195 pounds before Liverpool’s Hamier Williams-Borges pinned him, with teammate Tohirjon Usmonov in fourth place. Jackson Thomas lost the 106-pound final to Baldwinsville’s Aiden Cali.
Nikoli Sims was fourth at 285, with Corey Bauer fourth at 138 pounds and Anyas Goeman fourth at 132 pounds. Jacob Carlson was fifth at 120 pounds and Matt Dougherty fifth at 99 pounds.
Meanwhile, in the sectional Class A championships at Watertown, East Syracuse Minoa finished fifth out of nine teams with 118 points as Fulton roared to the top with 281 points.
Two Spartans reached the championship round. At 138, Alex Leo won a 2-0 semifinal over Indian River’s Kenenth Melton, only to run into Fulton’s Samuel May in the final and take a 13-1 loss.
Up at 160, Aslan Abdulla pinned Fulton’s Michael Strong in 2:42 in his semifinal, but ran into yet another Red Raiders standout, Camrin Galvin, in the finals, with Abdulla pinned late in the first period.
Andrew Crone finished third at 195, beating Fulton’s Shane Goutermout in an exciting consolation bracket final 9-8, while Dylan Johnston was fourth at 145.
Ayden Johnston got fifth place at 126 when Carthage’s Nick Loehr was disqualified, with Michael O’Brien beating IR’s Cadence Severs 6-3 for fifth place at 145.
Ali Abdulla pinned Oswego’s Owen Warner in 4:30 for fifth place at 170 as Max Wunderlich had to pin his own teammate, Braedon Bersani, for fifth place at 220 pounds. Noah Harbinger (132), Nick Modlewski (152) and Conor Todd (285) each finished sixth.
All of these ESM, J-D/CBA and F-M wrestlers will gather at SRC Arena this Saturday at 10 a.m. for the sectional Division I (large school) championships, with berths in the Feb. 28-29 state meet in Albany on the line.
