Not only was the Liverpool girls bowling team looking to join its boys counterparts as regular-season SCAC Metro division champions, it would have a big-time advantage for its most important matches of the season.
The Warriors are at home next Thursday for its league-championship showdown with Baldwinsville and then serve as hosts for the Feb. 2 Section III tournament.
Before all that, Liverpool had to make sure it kept pace with B’ville, both of them 10-2 after last Tuesday’s matches as the Bees swept Fayetteville-Manlius and the Warriors held off West Genesee 2-1.
Only Dominique Cimini bowled all three games for Liverpool against the Wildcats, finishing with a 512 series and high game of 190. Ashley Hardy contributed a 172 game and Mikayla Anguish stepped in late for a 155 game.
Liverpool’s boys match with WG also ended 2-1, with the Warriors struggling far below their usual form, Brandon Davis shooting the best game of 192 during his 489 series.
Josh Winzens had the best three-game total of 501. Devin Roberson, with a 473 series, beat out Deacon Roberson (449 series) and Zak Orsmby (442 series), but no Wildcats bowler shot better than Calvin Lee’s 451 series.
Back home at Flamingo Bowl on Thursday, Liverpool’s boys honored its lone senior, Winzens, before its match against Syracuse, where Winzens shot a 254 in between games of 207 and 203 in his 664 series.
On its way to another 3-0 sweep, the Warriors also had Devin Roberson open with a 246 in his 623 series and Deacon Roberson tear his way to a 265 to complete his 595 series.
The Liverpool girls also beat Syracuse 3-0, the highlight Hardy’s 252 second game during her 577 set. Mackenzie Gill opened with a 204 in her 537 set, with Makenzi Ormsby shooting a 180 and finishing with a 490 series.
Cicero-North Syracuse would have its own match against B’ville last Wednesday afternoon, and on the girls side it would push the first-place Bees, but take a 2-1 defeat.
Brianna Mabee shot a 546 series that included a 190 and a pair of 178s. Katie Cloonan, with her 489 series, was seven pins of Kathryn Artz’s 482 set.
Helping out, Marissa Leone closed with a 182 in her 473 series and Jessaia McGriff had a 461 series. On B’ville’s side, Jenna Spiech (579 series) and Amelia Ponto (546 series) led the way.
Prior to that, C-NS swept Syracuse on Tuesday. The boys Northstars’ 5-0 win had J.J. O’Connell finish with games of 224 and 204 in his 609 series as Kyle Patterson shot a 199 in his 552 series and Tyler Dottolo contributed a 544 set.
The girls match had C-NS gain a 5-0 shutout as Cloonan’s 192 game occurred in the middle of a 476 set five pins ahead of Artz’s 471 series. McGriff picked up a 456 series and Mabee had a three-game total of 421.
On Senior Day Friday, C-NS swept Cortland, with the 3-0 boys victory featuring Dottolo’s 243 and 246 games as part of a 693 series.
The depth was there, too, with Landon Spingler shooting 238 to close out a 625 series as Nick Wentworth’s 226 was in the middle of a 605 series. O’Connell contributed a three-game total of 600.
And in the girls match, the Northstars won 2-1 over the Purple Tigers, Artz opening with a 210 in her 531 series. Cloonan, with a 489 series, was just ahead of McGriff’s 482 set as Cortland’s Calista VanEpps had a 545 series.
