Divers from the West Genesee boys swim team claimed five of the top 11 spots during the Jan. 18 Salt City Athletic Conference championships at Nottingham High School.
Justin Byrne did the best of them, his total of 411.50 points nearing the state qualifying standard of 450 points and second only to the 476.10 from Jamesville-DeWitt/CBA’s Lucas Deknaey.
David Puma also had a strong showing for the Wildcats, finishing fourth with 392.50 points, while Parker McIlroy was sixth with 337.80 points. Bryan Reichert had 313.40 points for ninth place and Kyle Collins (277.95 points) was 11th.
Then WG would host host Cicero-North Syracuse last Tuesday and, on Senior Night, handle the Northstars 92-73 to improve its overall record to 4-2-1.
Ryan McMahon, who won the 100 breaststroke at the SCAC meet on Jan. 17, did even better here, improving to 1:00.95 in that event, his best of the season, having gone 1:01.05 earlier this winter to get under the state qualifying standard of 1:01.20.
Puma won in diving this time, earning 266.00 points to Reichert’s 220.25, and the sweep in that event helped build an already sizable Wildcats lead.
But it was Matt Barrington prevailing twice, topping McMahon in the 200 freestyle in 1:56.47 and also winning the 500 freestyle in 5:44.43.
Jacob DiBiase went 1:00.70 in the 100 backstroke, with Keegan Scharoun taking the 50 freestyle in 23.94 seconds to Nate Long’s 25.32 as Alex Shuron won the 100 butterfly in 57.55 seconds. Aiden Sperduti was first in the 200 individual medley in 2:19.90
Shuron, McMahon, Scharoun and Chase Foresti would win the 200 freestyle relay in 1:35.80, this after the Wildcats went 1:49.54 in the 200 medley relay, inches behind C-NS’s 1:49.49.
Two more meets remain for WG in the regular season as it faces Syracuse City next Tuesday and then, on Jan. 31, takes on both J-D?CBA and Oswego.
