With 2020 barely a week old, the Liverpool wrestling team could already boast of two major victories.
And that included the Warriors’ 47-29 conquest of its neighbors from Cicero-North Syracuse in Wednesday night’s showdown at the Northstars’ home gym.
Liverpool took four of the first five bouts against C-NS and never got caught, with Jeremy and Jacob Ianno setting the tone thanks to their back-to-back shutouts.
In the 120-pound opener, Jeremy Ianno handled Harrison Portorsnok 6-0, and Jacob Ianno was even more decisive at 126 pounds, handling Eric Salenski 11-0.
Though the Northstars got on the board at 132 pounds when Gaetano Julian pinned Jeremiah Paulson in 2:44, Liverpool countered with Jonah Gellar (138 pounds) pinning Vincent Ciciarelli in the second period and Dom Ianno (145 pounds) getting a pin over John Sherbourne witih 42 seconds left.
The next four bouts were split, with the Northstars’ Adam Brown (152 pounds) getting a last-second pin over Paul Marquis as Isaiah Wahdan (170 pounds) took 62 seconds to pin Jeremy Valerio.
On the Warriors’ side, Chris Ianno (160 pounds) pulled away from Dylan Firenze 15-6 and Josh Gatewood (182 pounds) pinned Chris Mehlek in 78 seconds before Hamier Williams-Borges, at 195 pounds, pinned Kamdin Bembry in 2:19.
Three more Liverpool wins followed, with Jake Ronan (220 pounds) getting a 60-second pin over Adam Rush as J.J. Guindy (285 pounds) blanked Jared Brandish 4-0 and Hayley Delia (99 pounds) pulled out a 4-2 decision over Kevin Mossow.
Only at the end did the Northstars string together back-to-back wins, Anthony Ciciarelli (106 pounds) pinning Lucas Smith in the third period and Dan Sweeney (113 pounds) getting a 17-2 technical fall over Rocco Degiormo.
This came on the heels of Liverpool winning the Jan. 4 Port Byron Mid-Winter Classic, earning 211 points to hold off South Jefferson/Sandy Creek’s second-place total of 194 points.
Williams-Borges got a technical fall of Kyle Kasper (North Rose-Wolcott) to win at 195, with Jeremy Ianno edging Carlton Alder (APW/Pulaski) in the final at 120 as Chris Ianno (145) used an overtime takedown to win his final over Oswego’s Jeremy Garcia 11-9.
Guindy was second at 285, with Jacob Ianno the runner-up at 126. Marquis, Paulson and Izayiah Haynes (285) each finished third, with Dom Ianno, Lucas Smith (99) and Gianpaul Cooper (160) taking sixth place in their respective weight classes.
C-NS immediately followed the loss to Liverpool by rebounding Thursday to top Oswego 69-15.
Starting with Jared Bush at 285 (who pinned Dan Evans in 79 seconds), the Northstars had seven pins, with falls also going to Portorsnok, Sweeney, Julian, Wahdan, Anthony Ciciarelli and Vincent Ciciarelli. At 220, Rush added a 10-3 decision over Alfonso Alonso.
