Even after some weather interruptions, the Cicero-North Syracuse wrestling team recorded a big victory against a long-time Salt City Athletic Conference Metro division rival.
The Northstars faced West Genesee last Thursday after a 24-hour snow postponement and took over in the latter stages to defeat the Wildcats 57-26.
With six bouts to go, C-NS trailed 26-21, but began to rally when Adam Rush, at 220 pounds, pinned WG’s Cole Arnold.
Right after, Brady Ramos (285 pounds) pinned Derek Dishaw, and when Anthony Ciciarelli, at 99 pounds, earned his fall over Jack Wade, the Northstars led 39-26.
A forfeit to Kevin Mossow at 106 pounds clinched the team victory, but Dan Sweneey (113 pounds) and Harrison Portorsnok (120 pounds) still closed up with pins over, respectively, Anthony Orendorf and Sam Snyder.
C-NS went to the Montgomery County Duals at Amsterdam on Dec. 21 and ran into very tough competition, especially the Fulton Red Raiders, who went a perfect 5-0 and claimed the team title.
Head-to-head , Fulton beat the Northstars 65-9, with C-NS only winning a trio of matches, all of them close decisions.
At 99, Anthony Ciciarelli got an 8-4 victory over Fred Pagan, while Sweeney won a wild 14-12 battle over Dylan Waldron right before Portorsnok held off Nick Parrish 4-2.
Two other bouts were close, with Vincent Ciciarelli (138 pounds) battling Walter Crofoot in an 11-8 defeat before Adam Brown (152 pounds) fell to Aiden Scaringi.
C-NS also lost 41-36 to host Amsterdam, despite pins earned by Rush and Anthony Ciciarelli, who at 106 finished off Marelia Arroyo in 36 seconds as Gaetano Julian (126 pounds) got a 26-second fall over James Weidaw and Isiah Wahdan (160 pounds) pinned Andrew Mickel in 56 seconds.
After all this, C-NS and Liverpool would head to SUNY-Oswego this weekend to take part in the Kenneth Haines Memorial Touranment as a lead-up to the Jan 8 match between the Northstars and Warriors.
