As we work our way through the big occasions and small satisfactions that mark the start of December here in our community, many people take the time to reflect upon the year past and chart ahead for the year to come.
The Liverpool Public Library is full of resources that can help you in both directions.
“We have a lot of children’s classic books and movies that you might want to pass on to your children,” says librarian Joellyn Murry, coordinator of the LPL children’s and family services department. She calls “The Polar Express” her favorite, and also cites “A Visit from St. Nicholas” (more famously known as “The Night Before Christmas”) and “Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town” as two holiday titles worthy of passing along to your next generation.
“Looking forward, we have the Winter Reading Challenge that will help with the resolutions you might make for reading with your children,” Murry says.
The Winter Reading Kickoff for children, teens and adults will run from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 2, in the Carman Community Room. Everybody will be able to sign up for the challenge at LPL.org and any time by asking for assistance at the Information @ LPL desk following the start of the challenge as well.
Our website can be used to compile best-of-lists for 2019 books available through our catalog, says librarian Maggie Foster, coordinator of the LPL community outreach department. “NoveList is the best, in my opinion.” In fact, among the available LPL.org databases are NoveList Plus and NoveList Plus for K-8.
Foster also suggests a trip through the LPL’s social media posts. “Our Facebook page has excellent photos of our great programs,” she says. “You can see if you were in any of them.”
You can find the LPL Facebook page at facebook.com/LiverpoolPublicLibrary.
“And maybe looking ahead, you can share your best library moments and tag the library,” Foster says.
Librarian Ginny Withers curates the databases available at LPL.org. She says the turning of the calendar year is a good time to research topics regarding health and finances.
“A new year heralds a new beginning and thoughts of changing our lives for the better,” Withers says. “Search for personal health, diet and exercise in Gale General Reference Center Gold. Interested in investing? Try Morningstar and ValueLine.”
Librarian Keith Gatling says the transformed main room’s new quiet space gives patrons a great place to both work solo or in small groups and get extra technology help from him.
He’s still available for Drop In Tech Help with Mr. G sessions on Friday or Saturday afternoons in the lobby. “But if it’s going to last more than 10 minutes (to solve your device problem), make an appointment, please,” Gatling says. Call 315-457-0310 x140 to set up your one-on-one session with Mr. G in one of the new study rooms.
Librarian Laurel Griffith says she’s looking to use the new space for her teen programs. She’s planning to re-start the Perler 8 Design event in the Studio @ LPL multi-purpose room, and has other ideas for that space that she’s hoping to roll out for teens as well.
