Karl R. Eldredge, of Skaneateles, passed away Dec. 1, 2019. Born in Syracuse, he grew up in Cedarvale and graduated from South Onondaga Central School. Karl settled in Skaneateles after marrying the love of his life, Aileen Chapman. They were married for 72 years and raised their family of three children: Linda (Jim) Kankoski of Buffalo, Dick (Cindy) Eldredge of Skaneateles and Brenda (Ralph) Banks of Delaware, with seven grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Karl was a gifted musician and his first career was playing in a country music show band known as the Ozark Mountain Boys. This group performed locally on television and radio as well as stage shows and dances throughout New York during the late 1940s, 50s and early 60s. His stage name was “Cyclone” given to him for his dexterity playing the accordion.
After putting his musical career on a back burner, he began a successful wallpaper and painting business until his retirement.
Retirement was not his forte, however, and, as he looked for something to busy himself with, he noticed the local town cemeteries had fallen into disarray and could use a lot of work. After approval from the town and a trip to New Hampshire to learn stone monument repair, Karl spent the next 25 years as the town cemetery superintendent, proudly restoring and caring for those cemeteries right up to his 91st birthday.
Karl loved living in the town of Skaneateles, was a founding member of the Town Zoning Board of Appeals in 1967 serving as chairman from 1978 -79. He then ran for and was elected as a town councilman for three terms from 1979 to 1991.
Later in life Karl also returned to his love of music joining a group called “Overtime” playing regularly at local nursing homes until last spring.
As for our Dad. Dad was a fantastic husband and father who left a lasting impression on those who loved and knew him well. He lived his life “old school,” as we would say about him, and are so very pleased he passed those old school values on to us. He is and will be sorely missed.
Karl’s wishes were for no calling hours or services. Contributions may be made to St. Andrews United Methodist Church, Mottville. Please send condolences to: bushfuneralhomes.com. The Bush Funeral Home of Elbridge has charge of arrangements.
