With strong runs in the Section III Division I tournament, Baldwinsville girls tennis singles players Brooke Tutor and Paige Tromblee both advanced to this week’s state qualifier at Drumlins.
The sectional tournament was, for the Bees, quite a follow-up to the Oct. 11 sectional Class A team tournament final, when the Bees got within a single point of the title, only to fall 4-3 to Christian Brothers Academy.
Tutor, holding the no. 2 seed, won 6-1, 6-1 over Angela Iskander (Fayetteville-Manlius) in the first round and then, in the quarterfinals, got past Liverpool’s Gabby Underwood 6-0, 6-2.
In the other half of the bracket, Tromblee rolled past Auburn’s Erin Calkins 6-3, 6-1, and by those exact same scores claimed her quarterfinal match over Liverpool’s Diana Kozenyatko.
Then, in the semifinals, two CBA standouts stopped the Bees’ singles duo. Tutor fell 6-0, 6-3, to Grace DelPino, with Tromblee running into top seed Gieselle Vlassis, who won 6-0, 6-2. Vlassis then beat DelPino in straight sets in the finals 6-2, 6-2.
In doubles, Audrey Benton and Hannah Gould got a 6-1, 6-2 win over Auburn’s Taylor Chadderdon and Gabrielle McGinn, but lost in the quarterfinals 6-0, 7-5 to Liverpool’s Julia Schewe and Angelica Underwood, one match from advancing to the state qualifier.
Reagan Doan and Ella Tromblee rallied past Auburn’s Claire Diffin and Alexandra Vitale 1-6, 6-1, 6-2 before a 6-2, 6-0 defeat to F-M’s Anna Manta and Phoebe Wang. Meredith Perine and Blake Tripodi fell to F-M’s Alexis Ahn and Emma Zogg 6-2, 6-1.
