No one seemed able to keep the Westhill girls volleyball team from continuing its perfect run through all of its OHSL Liberty division challengers – though the Warriors finally did drop a set against a league foe.
It came in last Thursday’s match against Marcellus, where the Warriors, after a 25-17 first set and 25-4 romp in the second, eased up – and the Mustangs won the third 25-21.
Westhill then closed it out 25-20 in the fourth set to improve to 12-0 as Sara Galante got 18 kills and 10 digs, with Sarah Schwartz getting 33 assists and Giana Militi earning 27 digs.
Kate Heinrich had nine kills and Morgan Richardson added five kills as, for Marcellus, Bronte Stahl earned seven kills and 10 assists, Jenna Mattison adding 12 assists. Elaine Grattan and Brooke Finarty had six kills apiece and Evelyn Webster got 13 digs.
In last Tuesday’s 25-11, 25-9, 25-4 romp over Phoenix, the Warriors got seven aces apiece from Galante and Grace O’Connell as Galante added seven kills and Heinrich five kills. Schwartz had 12 assists.
One of the best matches of the week involved Skaneateles venturing to Cazenovia last Tuesday night and making two different comebacks to win this Lakers duel in five sets and improve to 12-1 overall.
Through three sets, Skaneateles trailed, having won the second 25-19 but dropped the first set 25-18 and the third 25-21. Led by Maeve Canty, though, the visiting Lakers dominated the last two sets 25-15 and 25-10.
Canty had 23 kills, 18 digs, three blocks, three assists and two aces. Emma Keady notched 32 assists, five kills and seven digs, while Emma Miller got 13 digs. Stella Zang had six kills and three blocks as Alex Csemez contributed nine digs.
Skaneateles and Marcellus would both have matches against Jamesville-DeWitt, with the Mustangs facing the Red Rams last Monday and taking a 25-19, 20-25, 25-19, 25-20 defeat in four sets.
Stahl had 11 assists and Jenna Mattison got 10 assists, Stahl adding five digs and four blocks. Anna Fern had eight kills as Webster notched 17 digs, just ahead of Finarty’s total of 15 digs.
When Skaneateles met J-D on Friday, it lost 25-15, 25-19, 26-24 to the Red Rams, just its second defeat of the season. Canty still had eight kills and nine digs, with Keady adding nine assists and six digs.
West Genesee had back-to-back matches early last week, starting Monday with a 25-21, 25-14, 25-13 sweep of Oswego that pulled the Wildcats to the .500 mark at 5-5.
Anna Snyder had 23 assists, her passes often going to Mia Lamanna, who led WG with nine kills. Brynn Zajac got five kills and Isabella Allen added four kills as Mackenzie Winn got 11 digs, Allen nine digs and Zajac eight digs.
Far more impressive, though, was the Wildcats’ 25-22, 25-13, 25-16 sweep over a Liverpool side it lost to earlier this season. Snyder, with 27 assists, and Winn, with eight digs, led the way as Phoebe Anderson earned seven kills. Lamanna, Allen and Zajac each got four kills.
Then WG tumbled again in a 25-15, 25-18, 25-19 defeat to unbeaten Baldwinsville. Allen had six kills and eight digs, with Zajac contributing five kills and Snyder earning 14 assists. Winn added six digs.
Bishop Ludden met Mexico last Monday night and won each of the first two sets 25-20. The Tigers took the third set 25-21, but the Gaelic Knights closed it out in the fourth set by that same 25-21 margin.
Jasmine Cuffee had 11 kills, adding nine digs. Megan Virkler got nine kills and three blocks as Jayden Burney and Alexis Pietrowski had five kills apiece, Pietrowski adding 10 digs. Kate Ruddy picked up 25 assists, plus three aces and four digs.
Ludden then clinched a sectional playoff berth with a win over Bishop Grimes, splitting the first two sets, but then routing the Cobras in the third and hanging on in the fourth to take it 25-14, 23-25, 25-9, 25-22.
Ruddy, with her 27 assists, passed it to Virkler, who augmented her 12 kills with five aces. Burney got eight kills and four blocks.
Ludden’s 25-20, 10-25, 25-23, 25-22 win Thursday over Living Word Academy featured Ruddy with 23 assists and 11 digs, Burney earning nine kills and Cuffee adding seven kills as Pietrowski had five kills. Ally Royal finished with seven digs and four aces.
To complete a 4-0 week, Ludden swept Hamilton 25-19, 25-13, 25-14 on Friday, Cuffee getting nine kills and Burney earning seven blocks and eight kills as Ruddy distributed 18 assists and Royal had nine digs.
Jordan-Elbridge routed Hannibal 25-7, 25-15, 25-19 last Tuesday, getting eight aces from Ranait McGuire to go with her six kills. Ashlee Eaton added five kills as Sarah Lane produced 12 assists, Eaton earning seven digs and Elizabeth Bartoszewski six digs.
And in Thursday’s 25-13, 25-16, 25-15 win over Altmar-Parish-Williamstown, the Eagles saw Eaton produce 13 digs and three kills, with McGuire earning six kills and eight digs. Lane had nine assists.
