A fine regular season by the Liverpool girls tennis team meant that it returned to the Section III Class A tournament – but it did not stay long.
As the no. 4 seed, the Warriors were at home for Tuesday’s quarterfinal match, but it came against undefeated no. 5 seed Christian Brothers Academy, who proceeded to eliminate Liverpool in a 5-2 decision.
Both of the Warriors’ points came in doubles, where Juila Schewe and Angelica Underwood rallied for a 2-6, 6-4, 10-5 win over Grace Catalano and Aubrey Mills as Diana Kozenyatko and Gabby Underwood handled Lily Geneocco and Maddie Tallman 6-2, 6-1.
Elsewhere in doubles, Sheridan Bryerton and Kaia Wallingford went to three sets, but lost 6-2, 6-7, 10-5 to Sophie Schultz and Schutie Zirath as Megan Polhamus and Sarah Watkins fell to Hanna Kang and Annie Kilmartin 6-1, 7-5.
CBA dominated in singles, too. Liverpool’s Kelly Geiwitz lost 6-2, 6-1, to Juila DelPino, with Olivia Magnarelli falling to Grace DelPino 6-1, 6-1 and Crystal Morgans running into Gieselle Vlassis and taking a 6-0, 6-0 loss.
Moving on from this match, CBA then stunned top seed and defending champion Fayetteville-Manlius 4-3 in the semifinals, sweeping the singles and then having Geonecco and Grace Catalano win a third-set tie-breaker over Angela Iskander and Lexi Kellish for the clinching point.
Starting next Tuesday, some of Liverpool’s players will start in the individual sectional tournaments, with finals set for Thursday at Oneida High School.
