As the Fayetteville-Manlius girls soccer team geared up for Monday night’s big showdown with Baldwinsville, other local sides had plenty of its own matches to work through last week.
Jamesville-DeWitt fell from the top of the state Class A rankings after its Sept. 24 overtime defeat to Central Square – but not too far, the Red Rams at no. 2, trailing only Mohonasen, from Section II.
In last Tuesday’s game at Syracuse City, J-D unloaded and won by an 8-0 margin, scoring six times in the first half alone as Megan Baker led the way, her three goals producing a hat trick.
Single goals went to Grace Dimkopoulos, Tonia Kousmanidis, Grace Bridge, Sydney Balotin and Nora Prosak, with Dimkopoulos and Balotin joining Lucja Linder in the assist column.
Two days later, J-D welcomed its neighbors from East Syracuse Minoa, whom it beat 2-0 on Sept. 5. The second encounter saw the Spartans get on the board, but the Red Rams still emerge with a 4-1 victory.
Up 2-0 by halftime, J-D did surrender a second-half goal to ESM’s Jenna Hudgins, assisted by Angelina Polcaro, yet still added to its margin with Dimkopoulos and Megan Baker each finding the net twice as Kousmanindis, Bridge and Megan Baker earned assists.
ESM entered the week at 6-4, but improved on that mark by hosting Oswego last Tuesday and quickly getting away from the Buccaneers on the way to a 7-0 victory.
Taking 32 shots to Oswego’s one and dominating the flow of play, the Spartans saw Abby Hudgins and Natalie Peterson both score twice, with Jenna Hudgins getting a goal and two assists. Polcaro had one goal and one assist as Sophia Conzone also converted and Gianna Coccagnia contributed an assist.
Christian Brothers Academy took a small win streak into last Tuesday’s game at Hannibal and then gradually wore the Warriors down on the way to a 7-0 shutout.
Spreading its production around, the Brothers had Tatumn Kohlbrenner and Bailey Wolanski both earn a pair of goals. Bella Roberson, Lauren Mucher and Delaney Hayden had one goal apiece as Cristina Barnaba added an assist.
It was the same in Thursday night’s game against Jordan-Elbridge, CBA producing a modest total early and then getting far away late to defeat the Eagles 6-0 and get to the .500 mark at 6-6.
Kohlbrenner scored twice, adding an assist. Kennedy Paciaga, kept quiet in the Hannibal game, joined Gia Anthony, Emma Infanti and Paige Snyder in earning single goals as Cristina Barnaba and Rosalie Smithers had one assist apiece.
After Bishop Grimes beat Manlius-Pebble Hill 4-3 on Sept. 28, both teams went in different directions in the week that followed.
MPH had a wild battle with Bishop Ludden last Tuesday that ended in a 4-4 draw. All of the Trojans’ goals came in the first half as it grabbed a 4-3 advantage, Katherine Mezzalingua scoring twice as Natalie Storie and Peri Cannavo also earned goals.
But the Gaelic Knights shut out the Trojans in the second half and pulled even, and despite all kinds of chances, MPH could not move back in front. Goalie Angel Holligan finished with 14 saves.
Grimes fell 6-0 to Tully last Monday afternoon, seeing the Black Knights score five times in the first half to end the suspense early, while MPH returned to action Saturday and pulled out a 5-3 victory over Jordan-Elbridge.
Only ahead 1-0 at halftime, the Trojans gave up three goals, but answered with four as Mezzalingua again proved unstoppable, getting two goals and two assists. Abby Hinshaw had one goal and one assist, with Storie and MadelynHuff also getting goals.
