Once more, the Fayetteville-Manlius girls tennis team completed its regular season with an undefeated mark against a robust group of Salt City Athletic Conference Metro division contenders.
Baldwinsville had nearly upended the Hornets on Sept. 13, dropping a pair of three-set matches in a 5-2 decision, but did not get on the board in last Tuesday’s rematch, ending 4-0 in F-M’s favor as lightning forced an early stoppage to the match.
Only two singles and two doubles matches were finished. Anna Manta won 6-3, 6-4, over Brooke Tutor, while Trisha Adivikolanu routed Reagan Doan 6-1, 6-0.
Over in doubles, Angela Iskander and Lexi Kellish put together a 7-5, 6-3 win over Audrey Benton and Ella Tromblee as Maya McKenzie and Camilla Wojtasiewicz handled Meredith Perine and Blake Tripodi 6-0, 6-3.
Meanwhile, Jamesville-DeWitt’s perfect run through the SCAC Empire division was spoiled by Auburn, who rose up last Tuesday and, by taking every doubles match, knocked off the Red Rams 4-3.
J-D had swept the singles, starting with Tara Pollock handling Makayla Huntley 7-5, 6-0 and continuing with Mona Farah dominating Erin Calkins 6-0, 6-1 as Inika Gajra won 6-2, 6-2 over Marissa Moore.
However, the Maroons countered with three doubles points earned in straight sets over the Rams’ teams of Riya Sharma-Lana Wisniewski, Elina Park-Serena Patel and Libby Blair-Courtney Keough.
So it rode on first doubles, where J-D’s Sydney Cline and Celia Reid won the first set 6-4, but could not hold on as Auburn’s Kathryn Brown and Alexis Calkins won the next two sets 6-2 and 6-1 for the clinching point.
Manlius-Pebble Hill won 5-2 over Pulaski last Tuesday, with Parmees Fazeli’s 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Holly Pacyon starting a singles sweep as Ava Benedict beat Amanda Halsey 6-2, 6-0 and Emma Gross won over Isabella Roos-Lewis 6-1, 6-3. The Trojans’ doubles teams of Amatees Fazeli-Caroline Mezzalingua and Ileana Anghel-Sophia Menacho also won in two sets.
Another weather-shortened match last Tuesday had East Syracuse Minoa falling to Central Square 5-1. The Spartans’ Alana Day won in singles over Kierstin Lorraine 6-0, 6-1, but otherwise the Redhawks earned all the points in straight-set decisions.
Bishop Grimes lost 4-3 to Westhill because the Cobras had to forfeit three matches. Of those that were competed, Katie Knittel rallied past Sophia Frost 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 as Michela Marturano beat Katie Hagrman 6-4, 6-4, with Sarah Falgiatano and Sofia Zankoski staging their own comeback to win 3-6, 7-6, 6-3 over Sophie Langdon and Grace Lesselroth.
When the Section III team tournament brackets were released, F-M was the top seed in Class A again, but could face a semifinal against no. 4 seed Christian Brothers Academy if the Brothers knock off no. 5 seed Liverpool. With the no. 2 seed in Class B, J-D would face no. 7 seed Cortland in the quarterfinals.
MPH, meanwhile, held the no. 11 seed in Class C, but prevailed in the opening round at no. 6 seed Westmoreland, gaining a 5-0 sweep over the Bulldogs by prevailing three times in three-set matches, each of them comebacks.
Benedict’s 3-6, 6-2, 10-0 win over Kiersten Tynatishon capped a singles sweep where Parmees Fazeli won 6-3, 6-0 over Mikayla Tierney and Amatees Fazeli blanked Isabella Ricci 6-0, 6-0.
One game from defeat in doubles, Mezzalingua and Eden Hildebrandt beat Isabella Barretta and Lauren Murphy 3-6, 7-6, 11-9, this after Gross and Kaeli Ahn staged their own comeback to win 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 over Jordan Carroll and Olivia Golden.
It’s MPH against no. 3 seed Skaneateles in the Class C quarterfinal, the winner to get Copenhagen or Utica-Notre Dame in the semifinals.
