It proved quite a good week for area high school girls tennis teams, with Cazenovia continuing to play well and Chittenango ending a long win streak by the Marcellus Mustangs.
Chittenango’s big moment against Marcellus came last Tuesday afternoon, the Bears leaning on its strong singles play and snatching a point in doubles to edge the Mustangs 4-3.
Anna Rooney started the Bears’ singles run with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Danielle Copp. Brooke DiFlorio won over Colleen Marsh 6-2, 6-4, while Delaney Dawkins claimed a 6-1, 6-2 decision over Kaitlyn Kemp.
Twice in doubles, the Bears fell in three sets, with Abbie Austin and Allison Soulier unable to hang on in a 5-7, 7-5, 6-4 defeat to Megan Mitchell and Morgan Walsh as Brianna Crystal and Keelin Davie met the same fate, falling to Bella Clarke and Isabella Demeis 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.
Thus, Leah DeMauro and Jessica Hallock had to win – and after dropping the first set, they rallied past Sophia Shaw and Maddie Vetsch 3-6, 6-4, 10-3 to claim the clinching point.
Cazenovia had met Jordan-Elbridge last Tuesday, relying on its overall quality to turn back the much-improved Eagles 5-2.
Though Nova Berger lost 7-5, 7-5 to Anisa Bort in first singles, Nina Royer got Cazenovia on the board, beating Meghan Whalen 6-2, 6-3 as Clare Douglas routed Wendy Carter 6-1, 6-1.
The Lakers also won three of the four doubles matches. Alex Galle and Baylee Pierce handled Lexi Delfavero and Delaney Dunham 6-0, 6-1, with Julia Knutsen and Emma Schwartz defeating Maddie Green and Maria LaFleur 6-1, 6-1. Katie Pavelchak and Mae Sayre beat Skylar Crysler and Hayley Holland 6-1, 6-3.
Other matches last week were rained out, and so Cazenovia and Chittenango were set to close the regular season against each other on Monday afternoon and make up other contests before the Section III playoffs start.
