Before it returnsto its temporary home at Fulton to face Jamesville-DeWitt early next week, the Liverpool girls swim team found more success in last Tuesday’s visit to New Hartford.
The Warriors defeated the Spartans 97-89 to improve to 3-1 on the season, using its roster depth to overcome the fact that New Hartford won all but three of the events.
Liverpool did not get a victory until the seventh event, the 100-yard freestyle, where Delaney Gellert went 58.15 seconds, the only time on either side under a minute as Jessica Testone was second in 1:00.55.
Geller and Testone returned to help Kaitlyn Thompson and Sophia Russo win a close 200 freestyle relay in 1:47.72 to New Hartford’s 1:47.88 that gave the Warriors the team lead for good, and Thompson would prevail in the 100 backstroke in 1:08.67, just ahead of the Spartans’ Julia Ficano (1:09.27).
Otherwise, it was a string of second and third-place efforts that piled up points, from Gellert going 1:14.85 in the 100 breaststroke to Russo second in the 100 butterfly in 1:08.45 and Testone second in the 50 freestyle in 27.53 seconds.
Domenique DeRuijter had a second-place clocking of 2:12.01 in the 200 freestyle, with Payton Furr second in the 500 freestyle in 6:07.54. In diving, Sophia Recuparo had 198.50 points, behind the 235.40 from New Hartford’s Isabella Kolb.
Testone, Gellert, Russo and Megan Winn swam the 200 medley relay in 2:04.49 to the Spartans’ 2:02.41, and in the 400 freestyle relay Thompson, Winn, Natalie Petit and Chloe Brown finished in 4:17.84.
Cicero-North Syracuse had two tough meets in a 48-hour span, starting last Tuesday when undefeated Fayetteville-Manlius came to Le Moyne College and prevailed 96-70 over the Northstars.
Only twice did C-NS win events, with Madeline Thorne earning 248.10 points on the diving board as teammate Kaitlyn Carroll was second with 211.85 points. Also, Kate Gucciardi won the 100 backstroke in 1:05.10.
Bryn Myers was second in the 50 freestyle in 25.97 seconds to the 25.75 from F-M’s Morgan Kingsley. Myers, Gucciardi, Alayna Harbaugh and Brittany Wood went 2:00.60 in the 200 medley relay to the Hornets’ 1:56.96, with that same quartet swimming the 200 freestyle relay in 1:48.58 as F-M won in 1:44.30.
Then it was C-NS against Jamesville-DeWitt on Thursday night, and despite some fine individual efforts the Northstars took a 97-86 defeat to the Red Rams.
Thorne earned 248.90 points in diving, while Carroll improved to 221.80 points to make it a 1-2 finish. Jeanne Vinette, in 6:02.13, held off J-D’s Julia Antoine (6:02.35) in the 500 freestyle as Gucciardi, in 1:04.85, edged the Rams’ Emily Ninestein (1:05.19) to prevail in the 100 backstroke.
Myers was second in the 50 freestyle (25.92 seconds) and 100 freestyle (58.04 seconds), with Devinney second in the 200 freestyle (2:15.07) and Gucciardi second in the 100 butterfly. In the 200 medley relay, Gucciardi, Wood, Harbaugh and Myers went 1:59.44, second to J-D’s 1:58.70, while that same quartet went 1:48.11 in the 200 freestyle relay.
Now J-D would challenge Liverpool on Tuesday at Fulton before C-NS swims twice later in the week, going to Auburn Wednesday before clashing Friday with West Genesee at Le Moyne.
