At the library: Film festival and more
Skaneateles film buffs are invited to the library for our third year of screening the finalists for the Manhattan Short Film Festival! Manhattan Short is the only film festival of its kind. Film finalists are screened simultaneously across the world, with best film and best actor awards determined by ballots cast by the audiences in each participating location. Skaneateles Library is hosting two screenings, a matinee at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 26 and an evening screening starting at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 27. Both screenings will show the same 10 short film finalists and popcorn will be provided. No registration necessary.
This year’s Manhattan Short films are from France, Iran, Canada, Germany and Finland, alongside two films from the USA and a record three from the United Kingdom. The finalists represent the best short films among 1250 submissions from 70 countries received by Manhattan Short for 2019.
Manhattan Short continues to be a premier showcase for female directors with five of the finalist films being directed by women. This year’s finalists also represent an extraordinary range of film genres that includes intimate dramas, spine-tingling suspense and hilarious comedies, as well as genre surprises like a pair of science fiction films and one that focuses on tennis! The 2019 Manhattan Short finalists are: Nefta Football Club (France), Debris (USA), Driving Lessons (Iran), Tipped (Canada), Sylvia (United Kingdom), The Match (Finland), This Time Away (UK), Malou (Germany), A Family Affair (UK) and At The End of the World (USA).
Which of these ten short films is the best? You be the judge! It’s up to the audience to decide. Cinema-goers across the United States and around the globe will become instant film critics as they are handed a ballot that allows them to vote for the best film and best actor. Manhattan Short HQ will tally the votes and announce the winners in early October. We hope you’ll join us for the show!
If you enjoy Manhattan Short, be sure to catch up on the films from previous years, which are now part of the library’s collection! We have three DVDs, that each have several years’ worth of winning short films to keep you entertained.
