It was left to the newly-configured boys golf program at Fayetteville-Manlius to get the Section III high school sports 2019-20 season underway – and it didn’t take long for the Hornets to establish itself as the favorites in the SCAC Metro division.
On the morning of Aug. 24, F-M had a match between its “Green” team and “White” team, a departure from seasons past where F-M only had one varsity side.
At Woodcrest Golf Club, F-M Green, with the more experienced players on hand, won 188-211, with Adam Butch shooting the low nine-hole score of 35 over 38s shot by Matt LaCombe, Enzo Abruzzese and Andrew Heyman, with Velton Perry adding a 39.
On F-M White’s side, it was Andrew Ahn shooting a 39, one better than Jack Antshel’s 40, with Luke Weisiger (43) just ahead of Mark Hanlon (44) and Tobey Schulman (45).
Then F-M Green beat Cicero-North Syracuse’s Green team 179-210 a day later. Adam Butch shot 33, with Enzo Abruzzese adding a 34. Mike Millimaci (37), Velton Perry and Andrew Heyman (38) also broke 40.
All of this was a prelude to Monday’s Drumlins Invitational, where 19 teams would compete in two divisions, including F-M and local rivals Jamesville-DeWitt and East Syracuse Minoa.
Despite all of the competition, F-M Green emerged victorious, its team total of 193 well clear of Baldwinsville and Cicero-North Syracuse Blue, who shared second place with 205.
Individually, Butch and Perry tied for second with 36 behind the medalist score of 34 by Liverpool’s Spencer Baum. Mike Millimaci shot a 40 to match LaCombe’s total as Heyman and Abruzzese both posted 41. Andrew Ahn led F-M White with a 44 ahead of Weisiger, Alex Duggleby (46 each), Anthony Ahn (47) and Tobey Scheilmann (51).
As for J-D, it finished fifth among SCAC Empire division sides with 222, two shots ahead of ESM Blue’s 224.
The Red Rams were led by Punn Chitteralert’s 39, with Essex Glowaki shooting a 43. Tanner Burns, with a 46, beat out Tyler Brang (47) and Cooper Werner, who each shot 47 as Bryan Fennell had a 53.
Joe Pacheco and David Griffith each had matching rounds of 39 for ESM Blue, with Dan Sitnik posting a 42. Owen White had a 47 to edge out Braedon Smith and Zach Johnson, who each shot 48.
Away from all this, Christian Brothers Academy opened its season Monday by defeating Cazenovia 209-213. Joe Nicholson shot a 38, with Ryan McLaughlin getting a 42. Mike Santoro and Peter Scuderi each shot 43 and Jack MacLachlan added a 44.
League matches on Tuesday included F-M White’s 215-218 defeat to C-NS Blue. Andrew Ahn had a 41 at Woodcrest, with Schulman getting a 42. Duggleby shot 44 and Anthony Ahn posted a 45.
ESM Blue and Orange went to Greenview, with Blue shooting 212 to the Redhawks’ 219 as Orange finished with 271.
Griffith’s 39 matched Central Square’s Adam Woodmansee for low individual round as Pacheco posted a 42. White shot 43, with Leo and Sitnik tying at 44. Brett Smith’s 51 led the ESM Orange team as Colin Decker got 53.
