The Camillus Senior Center is pleased to announce the following upcoming programs. All programs are held at the Camillus Senior Center located at 27 First St. in the village of Camillus. Questions may be directed to the center at 315-672-5820.
Senior variety show
Join us for our second annual Camillus Capers…Music & Mayhem! Variety Show on Tuesday, Sept. 17 from 1 to 3 p.m. Senior performers will entertain and delight you. All are welcome. The cost is $3 per person and includes refreshments and the show. Tickets may be purchased at the senior center, 27 First St.
Painted treasures
If you enjoy painting decorative keepsakes, this is the class for you. New items are painted each month. All supplies included. Stop by the office to view sample.
Thursday, Sept. 5 from 10 to 11 :45 a.m., $15 per person. Instructor: Linda Spencer.
Chair yoga
Enjoy the benefits of yoga right from your chair. Learn simple movements that gently exercise each part of the body, even our breathing. These seated exercises build strength and flexibility so we become more mobile and confident. Additional balance work is done standing while using the chair as a steady support.
Thursday afternoons, Sept. 5 to Oct. 17 (no class 10/3), 2 to 3 p.m., $25 per person. Instructor: Diane Zarzecki.
Introduction to drawing
Learn to draw what you see using techniques to measure shapes and the spaces they occupy. Principals taught include: value transition, shading and contrast, line quality, texture, perspective and composition. Learn basic materials and how to use them. There will be at least one session on portrait work, others on drawing objects and creating designs. Class will be held in upstairs classroom – there are five stairs to climb or you may use the chair lift. Pick up supply list in office. Instructed by Christine Patsos. Thursdays, Sept. 12 to Oct. 31, 1:15 to 3:15 p.m., $40 per participant. To register, mail in or drop off check to center office. A minimum of five people needed to run the class.
Line dancing
Do you enjoy dancing but don’t have a partner? Line dancing is the perfect answer. Instructed by Beverly Proulx, this class will teach the basic steps and a few dances. Guaranteed fun. Tuesdays, Sept. 24 to Oct. 29, 1 to 2 p.m., $20 per participant. This class is for men and women.
AARP Smart Drive course
Learn defensive driving techniques to keep you safe on the road and receive a reduction on your car insurance. Wednesday, Sept. 18 or Wednesday Nov. 13, 8:3o to 3 p.m. You must attend the entire class. $20 for AARP members/$25 non-members. Make checks payable to AARp. You may bring a lunch or order lunch at the center (see PEACE lunch program for details). Participants should bring their unexpired driver’s license and AARP membership card if applicable. Class size is limited so early registration is recommended. Phone registration will NOT be accepted. Payment must accompany registration form.
Legal assistance
Maureen Kiefer from Legal Aid Society will be here several times throughout the year to offer assistance, advice or referral in the following areas: Medicaid and Medicare denials and coverage disputes; Advanced directives such as wills, health care proxies, living wills, and powers of attorney; Legal problems concerning public benefits including social security, SSI, and veterans benefits; Consumer matters such as collections or debt issues; and Housing related concerns such as landlord/tenant disputes. Monday, Sept. 16 and Monday, Nov. 18, 10 to 1 p.m. Appointments are required and can be made in person in the senior center office or by calling 315-672-5820. Donations are appreciated.
Advanced care planning
We all know we need to start getting ready for the future and this workshop will help you get the ball rolling. Learn from Nancy Aureli, RN and founder of Community Living Advocates, as she shares her knowledge of health care proxies, DNRs, organ donation, disposition of remains and more. Nancy is a caring nurse who has helped countless families start the conversation and get the paperwork underway. Thursday, Sept. 26, 10:45 to 11:45 a.m., free. There is no charge to attend this workshop but registration is required. Call the office at 315-672-5820 to register.
Food $en$e
This food buying co-op offered by the Food Bank of CNY is for everyone. Monthly units of 12-15 staple grocery items cost $20.50. Rotating monthly specials can be purchased in addition to the basic unit. Orders may be placed Mondays through Fridays 9:30 to 3 p.m. or on distribution days. Food pick up on the 4th Wednesday of each month (generally) from 2:30 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Stop by to pick up the monthly Food $en$e flyer which lists the items to be included in the package as well as specials.
