Perhaps the greatest moment in Cazenovia girls volleyball history involved beating Marcellus in a five-set epic in the 2006 Section III Class B finals.
On Tuesday night, the two sides reunite again, in the Mustangs’ home gymnasium, this after Marcellus switched from a winter to fall schedule this year, one year after Cazenovia did the same.
The Lakers arrived at that match well-rested after a six-day break and arrived with a 6-3 record, all following Wednesday’s home match against Westhill. Though the task got progressively more difficult, Cazenovia still swept the Warriors.
It looked, at first, like a quick outing, the Lakers crashing through the opening set 25-14. However, the Warriors got closer in a 25-19 second set and nearly extended the match before Cazenovia closed it out, 25-23, in the third set.
Amber Robinson contributed everywhere, finishing with seven aces, six kills, six assists, four digs and two blocks. Emily Stoker had five kills, while Dominique Lyons managed six assists and five digs. Madison Gabor (11 digs) and Lillian Durkin (eight digs) led the defensive effort, Jessica Matt adding three digs.
Other than the match with Marcellus, the Lakers also host Phoenix next Thursday night to close out the first full week of October.
