As they prepare for this Wednesday’s Salt City Athletic Conference Metro division championships at Liverpool, the West Genesee track and field teams first had to finish its regular-season slate.
The Wildcats did so by sweeping last Wednesday’s meet with Henninger at Sunnycrest Field, with the girls rolling to a 107-24 victory and the boys doing just enough to edge the Black Knights 73-68.
A sweep of the boys distance races helped WG, with Matt Bartolotta going to first place in the 800-meter run in two minutes, 3.2 seconds as Aidan Walsh ran the mile in 5:09.3 and Peter McMahon took the 3,200-meter run in 10:53.1.
Dan Gill, in 11.4 seconds, went 1-2 with Exavier Brumfield (11.7) in the 100-meter dash. Also, WG had Gill, Brumfield, Jakob Petrocci and Patrick Peris get first place in the 4×100 relay in 44.8 seconds as McMahon and Bartolotta joined Sam Mosher and Brandon Scott to take the 4×800 relay in 8:52.9.
Moving to field events, Henninger’s Kwamere White topped 6 feet 6 inches in the high jump, among the best in Section III this spring. But the Wildcats had John Henry Youmans throw the discus 111 feet as Evan Fairchild (98’4”) was second, with Peter Dwinell second in the shot put (37’4”) and Noah Uczen second in the triple jump with 36’1 ½”.
Over in the girls meet, WG’s Mikeayla DeJesus won two sprints, going 27.7 seconds in the 200-meter dash and 1:02.3 in the 400-meter dash after Caitlin Mills took the 100-meter dash in 13.2 seconds.
Mills also paired with Olivia Becker, Sandy Gardino and Natalie Keiling to get first place in the 4×100 relay in 53.12 seconds as Becker, on her own, was first in the 100 hurdles in 17.3 seconds.
Elsewhere on the track, Natalie Buckhout ran 800 meters in 2:29.5, with Lauren Puchta taking the 1,500-meter run in 5:12.0 flat and Mia Mitchell winning the 3,000-meter run in 12:05.3.
Abby Kuppinger claimed the 400 hurdles in 1:14.4, but also helped DeJesus, Buckhout and Abby Cooper take the 4×400 relay in 4:24 flat as the Wildcats were first in the 4×800 in 11:20.0.
Etana Davis swept the throwing events, heaving the discus 75’5” and the shot put 27’9”, while Becker went 29’9 ½” in the triple jump and Phoebe Anderson had a top long jump of 14’7”.
Following this, WG’s underclassmen made its way to Baldwinsville Friday for the John Arcaro Classic, where Bartolotta was third in the mile in 4:30.33 and Exavier Brumfield was fourth in the 100 sprint in 11.63 seconds. WG’s girls were fifth in the 4×100 and 4×800 as DeJesus got sixth place in the 200 and the Wildcats were sixth in the 4×400.
