Amid the steady stream of area high school boys tennis matches in the last full week of April was the renewal of some local rivalries within the OHSL Liberty division.
One of them had Westhill facing Skaneateles last Monday afternoon, and helped by a sweep of the singles contests, the Warriors got a 3-2 decision over the Lakers.
Jackson Bradley dominated his first singles match, beating Andrew Neumann 6-0, 6-1. The other matches were also straight-set affairs, Tom Chaddock beating Nate Fouts 6-1, 6-3 and Ryan Rolince battling past Luke Lynn 6-4, 6-3.
Both doubles matches went to three sets, and Skaneateles claimed them, Chris Burgher and Jack Panasci holding off D.J. Caloia and Kyle Hagrman 6-4, 2-6, 7-5 as Sam Gadjo and J.P. Sorderberg rallied past Noah Dematties and Jaideep Dhamoon 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.
Skaneateles lost again to Manlius-Pebble Hill by that same 3-2 margin on Wednesday. In doubles, Burgher and Panasci blanked J.J. Braverman and Harry Xu 6-0, 6-0, with Gadjo and Soderberg topping Casey Beach and Alex Fung 6-4, 6-1.
Yet in singles, Neumann lost 6-1, 6-1 to Dan Braverman, as did Knupp in a 7-5, 6-4 decision to Anthony Pitts. Fouts pushed Charlie Mann to three sets, but fell 7-5, 5-7, 6-0.
When Marcellus got back on the court last Wednesday afternoon, it could not gain much against OHSL Liberty division front-runner Christian Brothers Academy in a 5-0 defeat.
Andrew Kammer and Tyler Guerrina lost in singles to the Brothers’ duo of Dean and Ben Vlassis, each by equal 6-0, 6-2 margins. The doubles teams of Nick Hahn-Tyler Szalach and Dan Fox-David Stepkovich picked up just two total games in four sets.
West Genesee began its SCAC Metro division slate with a match against Cicero-North Syracuse last Wednesday where it claimed all four doubles points to subdue the Northstars 5-2.
In the closest of those matches, Stefan Atanasov and Ryan Joyce beat Johnathan Corl and Brandon Millias 6-3, 3-6, 6-1, with Dan Good and Jonathan Welles edging Ethan Dupell and Will Janusz 7-5, 7-5.
David Puma, paired with Michael White, won, 6-2, 6-4, over Josh Matyasik and Holden Sarosy, with Max Mekker and Ben Paoli getting past Ryan Gallagher and Edwin Hirsh 6-2, 7-5.
James Plunkett and Noah Ruston lost their singles matches, with Ruston nearly sweeping Wyatt Dupell, only to take a 5-7, 7-6, 6-2 defeat. But Matt Mannara dominated against Ryan Hill in a 6-1, 6-0 sweep.
