Unlike many springs where it takes until late April for the conditions to warrant matches, area high school boys and girls golf teams were able to get underway much earlier in the month.
Expected to contend for league and sectional honors, Marcellus faced Weedsport last Thursday in its first match of the season at Sunsey Ridge, and handled the Warriors 231-317.
Shawn Colella put together a 42 for nine holes, one better than the 43 from teammate Patrick Morocco. Lee Piekiel added a 47 as no Weedsport player shot lower than 52.
Jordan-Elbridge went first, hosting Altmar-Parish-Williamstown last Monday afternoon at Millstone and putting together a 273-321 victory over the Rebels.
Ben Sullivan shot the low nine-hole round of 49 for the Eagles, just ahead of teammate Jeremy Melfi, who shot 51. Colin Jewsbury and David Hearn both shot 56, each of them beating the low APW round of 58 from Josh Ostrander.
Then J-E defeated Fabius-Pompey 272-312 on Tuesday at Millstone, with Melfi’s 46 the low individual round by seven strokes over Sullivan’s 53, which tied the Falcons’ Byron Vedrow. Jewsbury had a 54, with Zach Lipton posting a 59 and Maddie Green adding a 60.
Among the girls golf teams, Westhill got the jump on a windy Tuesday afternoon, taking on Bishop Grimes and prevailing 256-281 over the Cobras at the Links at Erie Village. Kate Vaughan shot a 55 for the Warriors.
West Genesee gets its girls golf season underway this week, during the school break, with three midday matches, two of them against Oswego, with a home match at Westvale against Auburn in between.
