Madison County neighbors met in high school boys tennis last Monday afternoon, with Cazenovia easily getting the best of Chittenango, the Lakers not dropping a set in a 5-0 victory over the Bears.
Mitch Romig, working in first singles, got Cazenovia going when he defeated Evan Edwards 6-0, 6-0. Aidan Kalteski won, 6-1,6-2, over Anthony Roberts, with Traian Cherciu defeating Evan Smith 6-2, 6-2.
The doubles matches followed the same pattern as Cazenovia’s duo of Teddy Coughlin and Liam Flannery won 6-0, 6-2 over David Seale and Nate Smith, while Dan Gavilondo and Teddy Williams topped Devon Hardy and Brian Schermerhorn 6-2, 6-1.
That only started a successful stretch for Cazenovia, who two days later took on its namesakes from Skaneateles and easily claimed that Lakers clash by a 4-1 margin.
Much of the drama was in doubles, where Coughlin and Flannery survived a three-set epic to edge Chris Burgher and Jack Panasci 7-6, 4-6, 7-5, just as Gavilondo and Williams lost, 7-5, 6-3, to Nate Fouts and Andrew Neumann.
Up in singles, though, it was all Cazenovia, Romig rolling past Duncan Raddant 6-0, 6-1 as Kalteski got past Luke Lynn 6-1, 6-4 and Cherciu recorded his own 6-0, 6-1 win over Trevor Knupp.
That same day, Chittenango lost, 5-0, to Christian Brothers Academy, with only one of the matches going to three sets. In doubles, Seale and Smith paired up to win the first set 6-4, only to lose the next two sets by equal 6-2 margins to Max Lewis and Ayo Oguntola.
