No one in the regular season has come close to really challenging the girls tennis teams from Fayetteville-Manlius and Christian Brothers Academy, as last week’s matches continued to demonstrate.
By far the most important match for F-M was against West Genesee last Tuesday afternoon. The Wildcats were second in the Salt City Athletic Conference Metro division standings and were looking to avenge a 6-1 defeat to the Hornets two weeks earlier.
But the result was exactly the same here, the Hornets winning 6-1 as, in singles, Katerina Atallah got it going with a 6-1, 6-0 romp over Natalie Thurston, Anna Manta beating Mi Tran 6-1, 6-2 as Phoebe Wang shut out Emma Pinker 6-0, 6-0.
In first doubles, Alexis Ahn and Keara Polovick lost, 6-4, 6-1 to Mikayla Mannara and Katie Viau, but F-M got the other points.
Rachel Liu and Martha Welker topped Angelina Llanos and Anastasia Mello 6-2, 2-6, 6-4, with Maddy Drapeau and Cassie Wojtasiewicz beating Alyssa Congel and Emma Yeager 6-2, 6-1. Ava Abruzzese and Samhitha Adavikolanu won, 6-2, 6-0, over Annabelle Levy and Chloe Soltys.
F-M had already routed Syracuse East 7-0 the day before, with the trio of Wang, Liu and Emma Zogg not dropping a game in their singles matches, Zogg getting past Lori Tran 6-0, 6-0.
Amid the doubles sweep, Freda Ni got a chance to play, as did CamillaWojtasziewicz as they beat Yessica Chinea and Helen Vincent 6-0, 6-1, with Natalie Hugo and Lexi Kellish getting a 6-0, 6-0 win over Sophia Holtsbery and Kabita Nepal.
During Friday’s 7-0 win over Cicero-North Syracuse, the Hornets had Ahn and Welker work a bit in doubles, but still handle Lexi Hnatiw and Alexa Kulak 6-2, 6-2. Remarkably, Atallah, Manta and Wang did not surrender any games in six sets of singles play.
The week for CBA got underway last Monday against Phoenix, yet another 7-0 romp where one doubles match was forfeited, but Gieselle Vlassis handled Gianna DeRoberts 6-0, 6-0 as Grace Glowaki got past Ashley Kenner-Carbonaro 6-2, 6-1.
Three of the doubles matches were contested, too. Mary Kilmartin and Isabella Mead had a 6-0, 6-0 win over Mackenzie VanAuken and Courtney Worden, with Grace Catalano and Aubrey Mills handling Mia Graham and Morgan Kosakowski 6-1, 6-0. Despite a tough second set, Grace Coyne and Grace DelPino won, 6-0, 6-4, over Katelyn Carbonaro and Brielle DeRoberts.
It was exactly the same a day later as CBA dismissed Westhill 7-0. Vlassis, Glowaki and Albring dropped just three games in six total sets, and the closest of the doubles matches still had Catalano and Mills beating Cami Cortez and Grace Lesselroth 6-2, 6-2.
Yet another 7-0 sweep took place Thursday, CBA over Jordan-Elbridge, with Glowaki giving up the most games in any of those matches, yet still racing past Anisa Bort 6-2, 6-1. A 7-0 romp over Pulaski followed on Friday as Sophie Schultz and Maddie Tallman paired in doubles, beating Holly Pacyon and Jessica Yesensky 6-1, 6-2, the closest of the seven matches.
Highlighting its week of work, Manlius-Pebble Hill prevailed 6-1 over Bishop Grimes last Thursday, with one singles match forfeited. Parmees Fazeli won in first singles over Katie Knittel 6-0, 6-0, with Genevieve Morrow beating Kate Mathewson 6-3, 6-1.
Grimes’ lone point came in doubles, where Maggie Eallonardo and Hannah Maroney topped Kaeli Ahn and Zhijie Han 6-3, 6-3. By those same scores, though, the Trojans’ Emma Gross and Caroline Mezzalingua beat Samantha Burton and Jenny Morabito.
Elsewhere in doubles, Ava Benedict and Halle Erwin won, 7-6, 6-3, over Sarah Falgiatano and Abby Fletcher, with Eva Englich and Eden Hildebrandt turning back Lenora Cendrone and Abby Wilkinson 7-5, 6-2.
Before this, MPH could not get a point from Cazenovia in last Monday’s 7-0 defeat. Sara Antonevich could not hold on in a 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 loss to Emmie Dolbear, with Fazeli falling to Alex Galle 6-4, 6-4 and Morrow losing to Laura Connor 6-4, 6-2.
A day later, MPH did get a pair of singles points from a 5-2 defeat to Homer as Fazeli handled Marlena Kruman 6-2, 6-0 and Antonevich blanked Abby McLaughlin 6-0, 6-0.
The Trojans won all four doubles matches, the closest of them where Ahn and Mezzalingua lost 6-2, 7-6 to Kailtyn Clune and Alina Heyer as, in singles, Morrow lost in three sets to Catarina Kruman 6-0, 3-6, 6-3,
MPH did win on Friday, 4-3, over Chittenango, with Fazeli and Morrow taking singles points as, in doubles, Benedict and Erwin rallied past Anna Rooney and Brenna Stanton 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, while Englich and Hildebrandt won, 6-4, 7-6, over Riley Ellis and Sarah Lanphear.
