A whole lot happened last week in the race for the boys golf regular-season title in the Salt City Athletic Conference Metro division, and Baldwinsville was mostly a spectator.
Fayetteville-Manlius surged to the front of the standings, only to get upended Thursday by Cicero-North Syracuse Blue, while the Bees and West Genesee lay close behind them.
Only once did the Bees have a match amid this turmoil, traveling to Northern Pines last Wednesday and getting a dominant effort from all of its top players in defeating C-NS’s Green team 177-200.
Max Dec tore his way to a four-under-par 32, with Tanner Glavin getting a 35 and Matt Shipman adding a 36. Billy Guild and Alex Pompo each shot 37 to complete a top-five B’ville sweep as Sean Lawler and Steve Filapello each shot 39 to lead C-NS Green.
This improved the Bees’ record to 7-2, tied with F-M and just behind C-NS Blue at 8-2 as West Genesee sits at 7-3. And B’ville could claim the league title outright if it won matches early this week at Timber Banks against F-M and C-NS Blue, along with a rematch with C-NS Green and another with Liverpool.
In girls tennis, Baldwinsville faced Cicero-North Syracuse last Monday and, sweeping all of the doubles matches in straight sets, breezed to a 6-1 victory over the Northstars.
Lauren Devine and Hanna Manning won, 6-2, 6-3, over Alexa Kulak and Miranda Szwej. Aubrey Benton and Hannah Gould topped Bri Bonilla and Lexi Hnatiw by those same scores.
Similiar matches also took place in third and fourth singles, with Reagan Doan and Ella Tromblee beating Tina Chen and McKenzie Cochran 6-1, 6-3. Another 6-1, 6-3 match saw Katrina Hays-Peterson and Isabella Thomas beat Teagan Brown and Shannon Kirkpatrick.
Up in singles, Sarah Cavino lost, 6-4, 6-4, to C-NS’s Anna Dwyer, but in first singles the Bees’ Brooke Tutor routed Krista Feeney 6-0, 6-2, as Paige Tromblee handled Sara Cartier 6-0, 6-1.
Other matches got affected by various types of weather, so the Bees still had to face Fayetteville-Manlius, Liverpool and West Genesee before the regular season ended this week.
