Once again, the West Genesee boys golf team is proving itself as a top contender, even if it doesn’t always finish at the top of the standings.
The Wildcats, paced by individual champion Nick Bove, finished second in a field of 12 at last Monday’s Drumlins Invitational with a team score of 203, beaten only by Baldwinsville’s winning 199 as Fayetteville-Manlius was third with 204.
This was a bit ironic since, three days earlier at Westvale, WG had defeated the Bees 195-200 head-to-head. Now, with a larger field, the result proved slightly different, even with Bove’s efforts.
Shooting 36 for nine holes, Bove finished one stroke ahead of teammate Peyton Mullane, who along with F-M’s Adam Butch shot 37.
B’ville had three players – Max Dec, Alex Pompo and Tanner Glavin – shoot 38, while WG’s Tim Dipaola had a 39. The Bees then pulled in front with a 41 from Anthony Petragnani and a 44 from Matt Shipman, which matched that of the Wildcats’ Dan Benetti as Kevin McDermott had a 47 and Lucius Allen a 50.
Westhill also played in this tournament, testing itself against the large schools, and finished ninth at 229, though Anthony Maglisco’s 38 left him in a tie for fourth place among individuals.
‘Also for the Warriors, Michael Britt and James Hunt both shot 47, with Andrew Corning posting a 48 and Aidan Ryan shooting 49. Luke Gilmartin had a 56.
Then Westhill lost on Tuesday to Mexico 220-224 at Emerald Crest, the Warriors’ first defeat of the season as, for the Tigers, Connor Revette (40) beat out Logan Craig (41) for the top individual round.
Back at Camillus Country Club last Wednesday, Westhill hosted Skaneateles, who had defeated Cazenovia earlier that same day, so the Lakers were taking part in a rare doubleheader of two matches in two different locations.
The Warriors beat Skaneateles 220-230, Maglisco’s 34 in windy conditions two better than the Lakers’ Ty Jones. After Jack Canty’s 42, the next four best scores came from Westhill as Britt and Corning both shot 46, with Gilmartin and Ryan each posting 47.
