Through a constant, soaking rain, the Skaneateles girls golf team put in all the hard work necessary to bring a Section III Division II championship home from Oneida’s Kanon Valley Country Club last Tuesday afternoon.
And it almost happened.
The Lakers finished with a team score of 434, well clear of the other Division II entrants, but three shots behind Marcellus, who won with a total of 431.
This was largely based on the 88 shot by the Mustangs’ Mary Colella that put her in seventh place and qualified her for this weekend’s state tournament on Long Island.
By contrast, the Lakers’ low rounds were a pair of 104s shot by seniors Karah Blair and Addison Gremli, which tied them for 30th place in the individual standings with Oswego’s Hailey Furlong.
Following them, four other Lakers seniors competed. Jenna Fields managed a 107, while Jill Barker had a 119, Mackenzie Wood had a 124 and Julia Cirincone finished at 141.
To hang on to the top spot, Marcellus needed Elise LaBombard to shoot 107 and match Fields, while Kendall Koloski had a 116 and Grace Alexander posted 119.
