The Cazenovia boys track and field team honored its seniors prior to last Monday’s match against DeRuyter, and then nearly pulled off a shutout.
Only a couple of days removed from a runner-up finish in the Cooperstown Don Howard Invitational, the Lakers still had enough to put together a 129-11 victory over the Rockets.
Noah DeRochie won all three distance races for Cazenovia, claiming the mile in five minutes, 8.3 seconds before taking the 800-meter run in 2:16.8 and then finishing first in the 3,200-meter run in 11:38.6.
Slater DeLeon claimed two wins in field events, going 40 feet ¼ inch in the triple jump and 19’3” to win the long jump as Sam DeLeon cleared 12 feet in the pole vault.
Also, the DeLeon brothers helped Justin Gagnon and James Pavelchak run the 4×100 relay in 46.1 seconds, this as Pavelchak claimed the 100-meter dash in 12 seconds flat and Gagnon was first in the 110 high hurdles in 18.4 seconds.
Christian Winkler had a winning discus throw of 124’5” as Angelo Annotto threw the shot put 37’5” to prevail there and Dalton Sevier, topping 5’8”, was victorious in the high jump.
Cormac Race raced to the 400-meter dash title in 55.5 seconds as Jacob Olkowski went 1:04.4 in the 400 hurdles. Gagnon, Pavelchak, Jack Gabor and Andrew Kent were first in the 4×100 relay in 3:52.4 as Gabor, James McPherson, Justin Ossont and Tim Gibbons won the 4×800 relay in 9:30.21.
Two days later, the Lakers were back in OHSL Liberty American division competition, going to Phoenix and winning big again, routing the Firebirds 109-32.
Pavelchak swept to wins in the 100 (11.6 seconds) and 200 (24.0 seconds) sprints, also helping Gagnon and the DeLeon brothers claim the 4×100 in 45.5 seconds as Cormac Race won the 400 in 54.7 seconds.
McPherson took care of the longer races, covering the mile in 4:55.3 and the 3,200 in 11:17.1 as Gabor was victorious in the 800 in 2:12.3. Paired up, McPherson and Gabor, with Ian Marshall and Nick Barna, went 9:48.4 in the 4×800 as Race, Gabor, Olkowski and Pavelchak won the 4×400 in 3:47.1.
Ray Satchwell returned and, in the long jump, flew 18’9” before going 39’8” to win the triple jump. Winkler improved to 132’8” in the discus as Annotto improved his shot put toss to 40’9”. Sam DeLeon excelled in the pole vault, clearing 13 feet.
Then, competing for the third time in five days, Cazenovia ventured to Bragman Stadium (site of this year’s state championship meet) for the Cicero-North Syracuse Invitational, where it earned 23 points to finish seventh, ahead of every small school except Homer (who was sixth with 26 points) in a 26-team field.
Olkowski contended in the 400 hurdles and finished third in 1:00.14, while Winkler, in the discus, also finished third, his best throw covering 132’10” as Angelo Annotto (115’2”) was 10th.
In the 4×100 Pavelchak,Gagnon and the DeLeone brothers needed 45.43 seconds to claim fourth place. Collin Killiany cleared 10’6” in the pole vault to finish fourth.
Pavelchak got to fifth place in the 100 in 11.74 seconds and was sixth in the 200 in 23.88 seconds. Gagnon was seventh (16.92) in the 110 hurdles, with McPherson seventh in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 10:27.58. Sevier was eighth in the high jump, clearing 5’10” as Slater DeLeone was eighth (38’9 ½”) and Satchwell ninth (38’7”) in the triple jump.
Chittenango was also in the C-NS meet as Devin Myers had the Bears’ best finish, a sixth in the 110 hurdles in 16.82 seconds, also finishing 11th in the 400 hurdles.
Matt Morak was seventh in the 3,200 in 10:33.91, with Ersilio Cerminaro in ninth place (10:36.77). Jacobi Dwyer was seventh in the 200 in 23.90 seconds as Dylan Price took ninth place in the 800 in 2:07.68. Chittenango was seventh in the 4×400 (3:50.74) and eighth in the 4×800 in 9:28.51.
In the girls meet at C-NS,Chittenango had Chelsea Lamphere finish fifth (5:04.89) and McKayla Capeling sixth (5:09.58) in the 1,500-meter run before McKenzie Dombroski finished fourth in the 800 in 2;25.50. Kendira Moore was eighth in the 100 hurdles.
