Whether they have all their matches at Strike-N-Spare Lanes or a few, each of the area’s high school bowling teams will be there this Sunday to take part in the Section III championships.
East Syracuse Minoa is the defending Class B champions on both the boys and girls sides, and were on late-season rolls, climbed near the top of their respective Salt City Athletic Conference Empire divisions.
At the end of a busy week, each of the ESM teams would face Fulton at Lakeview Lanes, and the boys Spartans would emerge with a 2-1 victory over the Red Raiders.
Hunter Borkowski’s 256 game led to a 651 series. Ryan MacCombie had a593 series, with Sean Timmons shooting a 219 and Brett Smith a 214 during twin three-game sets of 549. That overcame Fulton’s Jason Southworth getting a 660 series and Joe Benevidez contributing a 633 series and high game of 258.
By contrast, the girls match went 3-0 in Fulton’s favor despite Haley Youker’s 597 series and 236 high game. America Carhart put together a three-game total of 603 as Rachel Dyett had a 487 series and Elizabeth D’Agostino had a 453 set. The Red Raiders won on home lanes behind a 637 series from Megan Guernsey and a 545 series from Liz Brown.
Before this, both of ESM’s teams defeated Auburn 3-0 in matches last Wednesday at Bowl-Mor Lanes.
In the girls match, Youker put up a 248 game on her way to a 678 series as Carhart stepped up for a 614 series and 222 game. For the Maroons, Kaylee Hodson had a 609 series (213 high game) and Lily Snyder’s 215 game led to a 560 set.
To win 3-0 in the boys match, the Spartans required solid numbers from Ryan MacCombie, whose 247 game was part of 623 series, and Hunter Borkowski, who put up a 241 game on his way to a 578 set.
Back on Tuesday, ESM swept Central Square. The girls Spartans beat the Redhawks 3-0, and though Youker cooled off from her three consecutive 700-plus series of the previous two weeks (including 300 and 290 games against Oswego Jan. 16), she still managed a 237 game and 601 series. Elizabeth D’Agostino had a top game of 199.
In the boys match, ESM held off Central Square 2-1, with Hunter Borkowski earning a 634 series (226 high game) as MacCombie posed a 236 game and 619 series. Sean Timmons’ 570 series included a high game of 214.
Fayetteville-Manlius had its girls team take on West Genesee last Monday, its second match with the Wildcats in less than a week, having prevailed in a 2-1 decision on Jan. 18 at Solvay Recreation Alley.
In the rematch at Green Lakes, the Hornets swept the Wildcats 3-0. Julianna Buonfiglio led the way by shooting a 490 series and high game of 183. Shelby Minor’s 187 game led to a 485 set as Francesca Femia added a 445 series. WG was paced by Gina Neri (455 series) and Katie Drogo (410 series).
Then F-M hosted Liverpool a day later, a 3-0 defeat to the Warriors. Buonfiglio shot a 495 series (180 high game) and Minor got a 448 series as Lydia Chase had a 403 set. Liverpool’s Ashley Hardy had a 617 series (213 high game) and Dailyn McCarthy added a 561 series.
In F-M’s matches Friday against Cicero-North Syracuse, the girls Hornets gained a point, but lost, 2-1, though Minor had a 527 series and 194 high game. No one else had a series total better than Hance’s 406 as, for C-NS, Carly Lescenski shot a 570 series and Elianna Pitts gained a 496 series.
Christian Brothers Academy had its boys team defeat Solvay 5-2 at Strike-N-Spare. Vincent Carno shot a 587 series and 213 high game to lead the Brothers as Nate Vault’s 194 game was part of a 511 set. Garrett Bowman contributed a 420 series.
Then Bishop Grimes met Solvay on Thursday, winning 5-2 on the boys side as Jordan Newman earned a 558 series and high game of 208. Jeff Dargiewicz added a 472 series, with a high game of 189.
The girls Cobras had a 7-0 defeat to Solvay, seeing the Bearcats’ Jessica Birdslow shoot a 669 series and 247 high game as, for Grimes, Audrey Hathaway led with a 391 series ahead of Raquel McDonald (386 series) and Katie Collins (366 series).
