Children ages 8 to 14 are invited to the Cazenovia Public Library Community Room at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 15, for the next installment of Art for Kids. Museum Educator Pat Hill and Children’s Program Coordinator Jenna Wright Martin will lead an exploration into the life and works of Georges Seurat (1859-1891).
French painter Seurat is recognized as the father of Neo-impressionism — a modern art movement grounded in the science of optics (light) and color. Seurat was interested in understanding the science behind color perception. His study of color theory led the artist to develop Pointillism, a technique in which an image is formed using small colorful dots. Using this method, Seurat created huge compositions with tiny, detached strokes of pure color that were indistinguishable when looking at the entire work.
In this program, participants will have the opportunity to study several of Seurat’s famous works. Following a brief discussion, the young artists will create their own landscape paintings using the Pointillism technique.
Participants will qualify for the chance to win an art set donated by a friend of the library. The kit contains 178 pieces, including colored markers, crayons, colored pencils, watercolor cakes, oil pastels, acrylic paint tubes and much more — all arranged in a beautiful wooden case with adjustable trays.
Class size is limited to ensure program quality. Call or stop by the library to reserve a spot. All events at the Cazenovia Public Library are free and open to the public.
