Again, the Baldwinsville girls volleyball team finds itself perched atop the Section III Class AA playoff bracket, daring anyone to try and knock them off.
The top-seeded Bees have a bye straight into Wednesday’s semifinal round, where it would face no. 4 seed West Genesee after the Wildcats beat the Northstars in four sets in the opening round. A win would mean a berth in next Tuesday’s final at 6 p.m. at C-NS.
The Baldwinsville boys volleyball team involved itself in an exciting match on Oct. 21 against Shenendehowa (Section II) right before the sectional tournament.
After a 25-12 loss in the first set, the Bees rolled to a 25-15 win in the second set to pull even. The Plainsmen won the third set 25-17 and were on the brink of ending it before B’ville pulled out the fourth set 25-23.
In the fifth-set race to 15 points, Shen won it, 15-6, but not before Tyler Aiello earned 13 kills, with Nate Johns adding six kills and Cole Zsemyle getting five kills. On the Bees’ back line, Dan Cerqua had 27 assists, while Aidan Priest finished with seven digs.
B’ville returned home last Tuesday for its Senior Night match against Liverpool, a solid effort that saw the Bees take just three sets to put away the Warriors 25-18, 25-12, 25-21.
Keegan Stan got his turn on the back line and earned 17 assists, while Cerqua had four assists. Aiello produced a team-best 10 kills as Johns got six kills. Zsemyle had three kills. David Cornell, John Naprawa and Greg Porceng had two kills apiece.
Against Living Word Academy Thursday night, B’ville made it back-to-back sweeps, putting away the Lions 25-19, 25-15, 25-11.
Cerqua finished with 24 assists, adding five digs and two aces as Stan also saw action on the back line, gaining six assists. Priest amassed 16 digs, two aces and two assists.
Aiello earned 16 kills, two blocks, two aces and two digs as Johns had six kills, three aces and eight digs. Zsemyle contributed four kills and three aces as Cornell and Luc Jerome each gained three kills, Cornell adding five digs and two aces.
