While most of the other boys and girls soccer teams in Central New York scramble to finish regular-season slates, often playing three games last week, it was quieter in Skaneateles.
In fact, the boys soccer Lakers were already done with the regular season, having closed things out Oct. 6 with an overtime defeat to Christian Brothers Academy to finish at 10-6 overall.
On the girls side, Skaneateles did have some work to do, traveling to Homer last Wednesday night and playing a tough contest that ended with the Lakers and Trojans in a 1-1 draw.
Tess Peterson earned the Lakers’ goal, with the assist credited to Abbey Logan. But Homer countered with an unassisted goal by Jodi Maus, and despite many chances, Skaneateles could get nothing else by Trojans goalie Anna Gugerty, who made seven saves.
Two nights later, at Hannibal, the Lakers had a far different outcome, nearly getting to double digits and bashing the Warriors by a 9-0 margin.
Taking 23 shots overall, Skaneateles built a 5-0 edge by halftime and didn’t stop there as eight different players would find the net by game’s end.
Only Olivia Navaroli scored twice, with Ry’ley Pascal earning two goals and one assist and Tess Peterson getting one goal and one assist. Brady Iles, Fallon Lynn, Riley Brogan, Isabella Reese and Maddie Peterson added goals as Sierra Sander had two assists. Katie Olsen and Claire Raddant each got one assist.
So the Lakers’ record was now 9-5-2 as it found out its sectional playoff assignment – a no. 8 seed, and a showdown with its fellow Lakers from Cazenovia, the no. 9 seed, in Thursday’s opening round, with the winner likely to take a shot at top seed and defending champion Westhill.
The well-rested boys Lakers were the no. 5 seed in its Class B sectional bracket, meaning it would face no. 12 seed Homer in the opening round on Wednesday, with the winner getting to a quarterfinal against South Jefferson or Adirondack.
