Another season is underway for the Baldwinsville girls gymnastics team, and it’s had to deal with some tough competition in recent weeks.
The Bees had its season opener on Sept. 11, where it took a 133.2-113.9 defeat to Jamesville-DeWitt/F-M. Then, a week later, B’ville hosted Whitesboro, who prevailed 135.9-117.8 behind 35.5 all-around points from Taylor Bushey, who scored 9.2 on floor exercise and balance beam while getting 9.0 on uneven bars and 8.1 on the vault.
B’ville would return home Monday to take on Central Square and it proved the closest meet so far – but at least the Bees won this time, edging the Redhawks 120.1-119.6.
With a difference of half a point, every routine on each apparatus counted a bit more. Kaye Lawton led B’ville with 30.2 all-around points, but it was Madison Brooks prevailing on the beam with an 8.5 score and adding an 8.0 to tie Central Square’s Sage Wolfe on uneven bars.
Lawton finished with a 7.0 on the beam as Mackenzie Teachout earned a 7.5 on the vault. Wolfe led the all-around category with 31.5 points.
Then, on Thursday night, B’ville faced New Hartford and Utica Proctor, where it lost, 149.4-122.55, to the Spartans, but beat the Raiders, who had 118.6 points. Lawton scored 8.2 on the beam on her way to an all-around total of 29.6, just ahead of Lauren Millard, who had a score of 29.3.
Lauren Addario picked up an 8.35 in the vault, with Brooks earning 7.5 on uneven bars ahead of Lawton’s 7.0. Brooks added an 8.0 beam routine as Lauren McIlroy scored 8.6 on the floor.
With a 2-3 record, the Bees would join the area’s other high school gymnastics teams in the fourth annual Breast Cancer Invitational at Valley Gymnastics, which raised funds for the American Cancer Society. B’ville would compete again Wednesday against Rome Free Academy before returning on Oct. 11 against the East Syracuse Minoa/Liverpool side.
