Even though it sported a 6-1 record and plenty of talent, the West Genesee boys tennis team found itself unable to put a dent into undefeated Fayetteville-Manlius in last Wednesday’s CNY Counties League showdown, the Wildcats taking a 6-1 defeat to the Hornets.
To begin the singles sweep, F-M’s Riley Ma got a 6-0, 6-1 win over James Plunkett, with Jeremy Zhang shutting out Stefan Atanasov 6-0, 6-0 and Michael Miller having no trouble beating Ryan Joyce 6-1, 6-0.
It didn’t look that different in doubles, either. Chris Lansing and Taran Judge handled Chris Upwood and Alex Argiro 6-0, 6-0, with Ravi and Rohan Dhawan topping Matt Mannara and Jimmy Harter 6-1, 6-1. By those same scores, Joel Farrella and Nolan Chiles beat John Northrop and Ahmed Mahmoud as Max Farber-McEntee and Aaron Costanza beat Erik Shanahan and Connor McCrea 6-0, 6-1.
Marcellus, who was off during the school break, resumed action last Monday against Phoenix and rolled to a 4-1 victory over the Firebirds.
Sweeping the doubles match, the Mustangs had Noah LaFever and Shawn Manke beat Aaron Erwin and Brandon Mironti 6-0, 6-2, with Justin and Trevor Costa pairing up and rolling past Evan Baldini and Sam Stellingwerf 6-0, 6-1.
Up in singles, Phoenix averted a shutout when David Burgess beat Quinn Clarke 6-1, 6-2, but the Mustangs countered with Andrew Kammer beating Ned Greenough 6-1, 6-3 and Tyler Guerrina getting a 6-4, 6-3 win over Josh VanGorder.
Then Marcellus faced West Genesee head-to-head on Thursday, with the Wildcats getting the best of it in a 6-1 victory despite Kammer prevailing in first singles for the Mustangs, beating Plunkett 7-6 (8-6), 6-1.
WG gained one singles point through a forfeit, but earned the other when Mannara beat Guerrina 6-0, 6-0. In the three contested doubles matches, Upwood and Harter topped Manke and LaFever 6-0, 6-0, with Atanasov and Northrop beating Dan Wrona and Justin Costa 6-3, 6-3. Joyce and Noah Ruston blanked Clarke and Dakota Dunbar 6-0, 6-0.
On Friday, WG handled Cicero-North Syracuse 6-1, claiming all four doubles matches, In the toughest of them, Argiro and Harter beat John Barraco and Trey Nordin-Abbey 7-6 (7-5), 6-2, with Mahmoud and David Neri beating Gehrig Sarosey and Josh Matyasik 6-4, 6-4.
In singles, though Atanasov took a 6-0, 6-2 defeat to the Northstars’ Connor Millias, the Wildcats earned the other two points when Upwood beat Justin Kegebein 6-2, 6-3 and Mannara had a 6-0, 6-0 shutout over Edwin Hirsh.
Though Westhill proved quite competitive in last Monday’s match against Skaneateles, it still could gain a point against the Lakers in a 5-0 defeat.
The closest call came in second doubles, where the Warriors’ Conor Mahoney and Ryan Rolince pushed Malcolm Lombardi and Jack Lawson to a third set, only to take a 6-3, 3-6, 6-0 loss. In the only other doubles match, Colin Catone and Tom Chaddock fell to Matt Benson and Ryan Bailey 6-1, 6-3.
Up in singles, Andrew Doner played Joe Ausio close in both sets of a 7-5, 7-5 defeat. Jackson Bradley got into a second-set tie-breaker, yet lost, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3), to Connor Driscoll, with Mike Ferrara falling to Dan Judge 6-3, 6-2.
Westhill recovered on Tuesday, beating Onondaga 4-1. Doner, in first singles, lost, 6-1, 6-4, to Dan Kelly, but Bradley beat Zach Hay 6-1, 6-3, and Ferrara shut out Taylor Featherstone 6-0, 6-0.
Mahoney and Rolince got their own 6-0, 6-0 win over Wood and Featherstone in doubles, while Catone and Chaddock worked a bit longer, but still beat Corey Guyder and Max Marcy 6-1, 6-3.
Then, on Friday afternoon, Westhill won another 4-1 decision, this time over the Chittenango Bears. Claiming both doubles points, the Warriors had Catone and Chaddock beat Zach Falkenburg and Matt Lanphear 6-4, 6-4, with Ferrara and Rolince pairing up to beat Aaron Norman and Mike Ackerman 6-2, 6-3.
Moving to singles play, the Warriors were able to claim a forfeit, and the other two matches were split, Doner falling ton Sean Austin 6-3, 6-3, but Bradley rolling to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Ben Cyr.
