Between a scrimmage with Norwich and a meet against Institute of Technology Central, the Cazenovia boys track and field team had plenty of serious work to do during the first full week of April.
The Lakers won that scrimmage over Norwich, 80-60, and then handled its league opener, too, at Buckley-Volo Field, relying on its strength in field events to overcome ITC victories in races as it put together a 76-64 victory over the Eagles.
Of the six field events, Cazenovia claimed four of them, starting with the shot put, where Will Kmetz tossed it 38 feet 2 inches. Then Christian Winkler put up a discus throw of 115’1, part of a 1-2-3 sweep where Angelo Annotto was second (110’3 1/2”) and Nate Spangler (101’5”) got third place.
Alec Boone was victorious in the long jump with a top attempt of 19’8”. Ray Satchwell was second in both the triple jump (36’7 ½”) and high jump (5’4”), while Sam Deleon would win the pole vault by clearing 9 feet as Collin Killanny topped 8’6”.
On the oval, Cazenovia won two of three relays. Boone, James Pavelchak, Jimmy McPherson and Elijah Harper would claim the 4×100 in 55.1 seconds, while Cormac Race joined McPherson, Pavelchak and Boone to post 3:52.56 and dominate the 4×400.
McPherson, on his own, went 11:56.7 to win the 3,200-meter run, while Pavelchak got first place in the 200-meter dash in 24.9 seconds. ITC star Solomon Lawrence edged McPherson, 4:55.1 to 4:58.1, in the mile and also went 2:05.6 in the 800-meter run.
Boone finished second in the 100-meter dash in 11.8 seconds. Justin Gagnon went 16.9 seconds to finish second in the 110 high hurdles as Noah DeRochie got second place (12:03 flat) behind McPherson in the 3,200.
