Though it dropped its first meet of the season to Liverpool on Nov. 30, the West Genesee boys swim team competed quite well, and gained confidence that carried over into Wednesday’s home opener against Oswego.
The Wildcats beat the Buccaneers 93-84, getting started by having Brian Salmons, Ryan Hagadorn, Zach Walker and Tyler Shoults take first place in the 200-yard medley relay in a time of one minute, 54.11 seconds.
WG had to wait until the 50 freestyle to get an individual victory, seeing Nate Gdula prevail there in 22.94 seconds, with Salmons in third place. Gdula completed his sprint sweep when he went 51.13 seconds for first place in the 100 freestyle.
Peter Bowman gained a victory in the diving competition with 289.30 points, part of a 1-2-3 sweep with teammates David Puma and Justin Byrne, but that, along with Gdula’s pair of wins, were the Wildcats’ lone first-place finishes in individual events.
Still, WG racked up points through second and third-place efforts. For example, Evan Tuthill was second and Cameron Chao third in the 200 freestyle, with Ryan McMahon and Zach Zaonetti getting those same spots in the 200 individual medley.
Moving to the 100 butterfly, Chao was third and Alex Shuron rose to take second place. McMahon got second place and Shoults third in the 500 freestyle before Gdula, McMahon, Hagadorn and Tuthill paired to win the 200 freestyle relay in 1:37.90.
WG will take its 1-1 record into next Wednesday night’s meet against Cicero-North Syracuse at Le Moyne College.
