Entering the last week of September, the Baldwinsville boys soccer team found itself at no. 13 in the state Class AA rankings, one spot ahead of Fayetteville-Manlius despite the Hornets’ head-to-head win in that 3-2 overtime thriller Sept. 17 at Swan Pond.
While the Bees looked forward to this Saturday’s rematch with the Hornets, it had other important matches right in front of them, starting with last Monday night’s trip to Henninger, where it got away in the second half for a 4-0 victory over the Black Knights, the team’s ninth shutout of the fall.
B’ville’s ninth shutout of the fall mirrored that of its 4-0 win over Liverpool in its previous outing Sept. 23, only here the big surge came in the late going as the Bees had to scrap to a 1-0 halftime edge.
To get away, the Bees needed Brandon Mimas to scored twice, with Mike Brussel adding a goal and assist. Stan Jensen had the other goal as Connor Carhart, Evan Smith and Jason Hahn gained one assist apiece.
Back home Thursday night, B’ville took on Corcoran, choosing this evening to honor all of its seniors on the squad despite the fact that two more home games remained. It chose wisely, with the Bees giving the home fans quite a show as it roared past the Cougars 6-0.
By halftime, it was already 3-0, but B’ville, giving extensive minutes to all of its seniors, kept on rolling, with Mimas and Jensen each providing a pair of goals and Mimas tacking on an assist.
Smith and Cole Peters were credited with the other goals, while Bush picked up two assists. Frank Levanti and Joe Todora had one assist apiece, and B’ville, overall, took 22 shots to Corcoran’s one as three goalies – Scott Ferrari, Gunner Hunt and Nolan Murphy – got to see some action.
Having moved to 10-1-1 on the season, B’ville would go to West Genesee Tuesday and host Nottingham Thursday, all leading up to the big showdown with F-M, which kicks off Saturday at 1:30 after the girls soccer Bees face Rochester Mercy at 11 a.m.
