Historic images help to develop our understandings of local history and define our community identity. Last spring the Cazenovia Public Library created a unique collection of postcards featuring 10 historic images; each photograph represents a chapter of Cazenovia’s unique story. This project explores the town’s richly textured history through the buildings, places, and people that have proven integral to its development. This fall join Elisha Davies, Pat Hill, and Julia Shortzberger for the chance to take a closer look at these images and they stories they tell. The presentation, “Exploring Local History Through Postcards,” will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 28, at 7 p.m. in the Community Room.
During this interactive presentation, the Library’s Museum staff will engage the audience using Visual Thinking Strategies (V.T.S.) as a springboard for discussion. V.T.S. is an inquiry-based method used in museums and classrooms across the country to foster visual literacy, critical thinking, and communication skills.
The postcard series features high-resolution photographs selected from the Library’s Archive Room. The images represent mid-nineteenth to early-twentieth century Cazenovia life. The postcards are currently on display at the entrance to the Library’s gallery and will be available for purchase following the presentation. The complete collection includes “West Shore Station,” “The Village Pier,” “Lincklaen House, 1866,” “Legion Post 88 Band,” “Cows on Main,” Cazenovia House Kitchen,” “The Sunken Canoe,” “Cazenovia Canning Factory,” “West on Albany St, c. 1890,” and “Chittenango Falls.” Individual postcards will be available for $1.50. Purchase one of each or mix and match ten cards for $12.50.
