Now aiming at the top of the CNY Counties League standings, the Fayetteville-Manlius boys golf team shook off its Sept. 1 defeat to Baldwinsville and returned to Woodcrest last Tuesday, where it saw Kyle Gilroy go low in a 184-205 victory over Cicero-North Syracuse’s Blue squad.
Gilroy shot a four-under-part 32 for his nine holes, pulling away from everyone, including teammate Adam Butch, who had a 37. Sam DiChristina had a season-best 38 to match Tommy Ryu as John Cacchio shot a 39. By contrast, just one C-NS Blue player broke 40 as Brendan Villnave led his side with a 38.
Another pivotal match loomed on Friday between F-M and West Genesee at Westvale. Remembering how the Wildcats edged them out for the Section III Class AA team title a year ago, the Hornets plotted a bit of payback – and got it, needing every of its depth to beat the Wildcats 183-187.
WG’s Dylan Plis led all individuals, posting a 34. That was one better than Butch, who had a 35. WG stayed in front when Jimmy LaValle, shooting a 36, and Joe Morgan, with a 37, countered the 36 from Gilroy.
The match turned, though, when no other Wildcats player was able to break 40, a mark that was lowered by three other F-M golfers – Jason Coleman and Colin Sommers both matching Morgan’s 37, and Tim Zapisek adding a 38. WG’s Nick Bove and Dan Benetti couldn’t quite match those rounds, though they both shot 40.
Christian Brothers Academy was undefeated until a Sept. 2 match at Drumlins with fall season newcomer Skaneateles, which went to the wire before the Lakers prevailed, 216-217, over the Brothers.
The big story was how Ty Jones, with a 36, led Skaneateles, creating the winning margin because no one on CBA’s side could better the 41s from Steve Fournier, Jack Lester and David Gross. Chris Bushnell had a 46 and Mike Santoro a 48, but they trailed the Lakers’ Carter Stiegel, Kenny Peterson (42 each) and Michael Murphy (45).
Amid a series of Thursday weather postponements, CBA did have its match with Tully and lost again. The 226-232 decision at Vesper Hills saw Gross shoot a 39, three shots behind the Black Knights’ Alex Crysler, with Lester adding a 40, the same as Tully’s Colin Byrnes, but Savage settling for a 47 ahead of Santoro (51) and Bryan Casler-Tyrell (55).
East Syracuse Minoa had two matches on Sept. 2, with ESM Blue breaking a brief skid by defeating Central Square 223-231 at Greenview and ESM Orange taking a 231-270 defeat to Tully at the Links at Erie Village.
Against Central Square, ESM Blue needed a 38 from Ian Rivers and a 39 from Dan Marriott to top the Redhawks’ Larry Romano, who led his side with a 43. David Griffith and Nick Rogers each shot 48 for the Spartans as Ryan MacCombie and Dan Sitnik contributed rounds of 50.
ESM Orange could not find its game against Tully, with Joe Pacheco and Ryan Walsh each shooting 51 as Nate Powell and Donovan Marriott had matching totals of 54. They all trailed the Black Knights’ duo of Colin Byrnes and Wyatt Brown, who both finished with 40 to lead the visitors.
Yet when play resumed after Labor Day weekend, ESM Blue could not conquer Jamesville-DeWitt, who came to Erie Village last Tuesday and beat the Spartans 216-225 to improve to 4-2 on the season.
Abel Ratanaphan shot a 37 to lead the Red Rams, the only sub-40 total as ESM Blue’s Dan Marriott had a 41. To support his brother, Alvin Ratanaphan had a 42, while Jake Ellithorp earned a 43. Ryan Archer shot a 45 and Mac Mott a 49 as, for the Spartans, Rivers shot a 42 ahead of Rogers (44), Griffith and Justin Seltzer (49 each).
J-D had its own match with Central Square on Thursday rained out, as was both of ESM’s matches. But ESM Blue did face Fulton on Friday at Battle Island and prevailed, 225-243, over the Red Raiders.
Marriott posted a 39, edging out Fulton’s Hunter Hubel (40) for low individual round. Rivers, shooting a 41, was close behind, and ESM Blue got away with Griffith and Rogers both shooting 46 (just three Red Raiders shot 47 or lower) and MacCombie posting a 53.
