Things are underway for the Baldwinsville girls swim team, though not in the ideal manner.
The Bees waged a close battle with Fayetteville-Manlius in last Wednesday night’s season opener at Cazenovia College, the Hornets’ home pool, but a late comeback fell just short as B’ville took a 92-85 defeat.
Some early wins were attained in individual races thanks to Alyse Baker, who took the 200-yard freestyle in 2:08.07 to edge F-M’s Hannah Kellogg (2:08.09) by two-hundredths of a second, and Anna DiOrio, whose time of 25.61 seconds in the 50 freestyle was the lone effort under 26 seconds.
However, the Hornets used a series of sweeps in other races to build up a substantial margin, so by the time DiOrio helped the Bees’ 200 freestyle relay team prevail in 1:49.07 to the opposition’s 1:49.97, the margin was already too much to overcome.
Still, B’ville plugged, with DiOrio second (59.47 seconds) to Abbey Harris (58.18 seconds) in the 100 freestyle before Noelle Staso, in 1:10.93, beat Caitlyn Spaulding (1;18.45) and Julia Atkins (1:30.21) in the 100 breaststroke.
During the 100 backstroke, Emily Spaulding prevailed in 1:07.60, well clear of Erin Mordaunt (1:12.33) and McKenna Redmore (1:16.20). B’ville also had a first-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 4:17.39.
Addie Antshel led F-M, winning the 200 individual medley in 2:31.57 over B’ville’s Grace Spakura (2:32.73) and also taking the 100 butterfly. The Bees would return to the Baker High School pool for its home opener Wednesday against Cicero-North Syracuse.
